Il cancro è prevalentemente una malattia che colpisce l'età matura: e lo si vede bene negli ambulatori e nelle corsie dei reparti che seguono pazienti con tumore. Ma, diversamente che in passato, l'età avanzata non è più una barriera al trattamento chirurgico ed alla radioterapia, e persino alla somministrazione della chemioterapia, anche se in questo caso l'atteggiamento terapeutico deve tenere in maggiore considerazione le altre malattie di accompagnamento e lo stato generale e funzionale del paziente. E i grandi studi epidemiologici Itacare e Eurocare mostrano un aumento dei tassi di sopravvivenza degli anziani neoplastici nell'ultimo decennio. Ma di fronte alla nuova emergenza il rischio è quello di non avere strumenti adeguati.
