Resistant Hypertension
Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Treatment
Giuseppe Mancia
editore: Springer Verlag
pagine: 200
A growing number of people suffer from so-called resistant hypertension, that is to say, high blood pressure that does not respond to treatment. This disorder is of great current interest and importance for public health, being a common clinical problem faced by both primary care clinicians and specialists. Furthermore, as older age and obesity are among the strongest risk factors for uncontrolled hypertension, the incidence of resistant hypertension will likely increase as the population becomes more elderly and heavier. While the prognosis of resistant hypertension is unknown, cardiovascular risk is undoubtedly increased since patients often have a history of long-standing, severe hypertension complicated by multiple other cardiovascular risk factors. This volume, compiled by a panel of world-renowned experts, offers a comprehensive exploration of resistant hypertension, covering epidemiology, complex diagnostic aspects, and the therapeutic options currently available, with due attention to overall treatment strategies. New therapeutic agents and procedures, such as renal denervation and baroreceptor stimulation, are also described. In addition, the book addresses the economic aspects of resistant hypertension and the role of the different professional figures, from GPs to hypertension specialists, in dealing with it.
Special Issues in Hypertension
a cura di A. E. Berbari, G. Mancia
editore: Springer Verlag
pagine: 500
This book is not intended as a full detailed report on hypertension and related disorders, but instead focuses on particular issues in hypertension. It looks at emerging recently described forms of hypertension that are frequently encountered in clinical practice (prehypertension, white-coat and masked hypertension, hypertension in the elderly) and discusses novel aspects of target organ disease (for example, cognitive impairment, dementia, and sexual dysfunction), and changing concepts in the management of hypertension and antihypertensive pharmacotherapy. It also looks at specific topics that are rarely discussed in books, including hypertension control in postmenopausal women on hormonal replacement therapy, Ramadan fasting, painful inflammatory disorders, and aldosterone escape. Finally, it examines newer cardiovascular risk factors (for example, uric acid, circadian blood pressure changes, blood pressure variability).

Secondary Hypertension
Clinical Presentation, Diagnosis, and Treatment
George A. Mansoor
editore: Humana Press Inc.
pagine: 368
Secondary forms of hypertension are not uncommon in clinical prac- tice, but they are often overlooked or forgotten by clinicians in many fields of medicine. Dr. George Mansoor' s volume on Secondary Hyper- tension is an important contribution to the field of clinical hypertension and vascular diseases, since it brings up to date the numerous diagnostic and therapeutic advances in the evaluation for secondary types of hyper- tension. In the past, textbooks usually stated that an etiology could be determined in less than 5% of patients presenting with newly diagnosed hypertension. We now know this is far too low a proportion (e.g., pri- mary hyperaldosteronism alone may account for hypertension in 5% of patients presenting with chronic elevations in blood pressure). Secondary Hypertension has been thoughtfully organized into chap- ters evaluating screening and diagnosis, as well as medical and/or sur- gical intervention of the well-known etiologies of secondary hypertension in adults and children. Additional coverage is given to such exogenous or lesser appreciated causes of secondary hypertension as obstructive sleep apnea and drugs.
These sections make this book novel because in the past little attention has been paid to the effects of noncar- diac drugs that interfere with antihypertensive therapy or to exogenous substances that might induce refractory hypertension.
Hypertension in Pregnancy
Alexander Heazell, Errol R. Norwitze altri
editore: Cambridge University Press
pagine: 208
Hypertensive disorders are among the most common medical complications of pregnancy, with an incidence of approximately 6-10%. This spectrum of conditions includes essential hypertension, pre-eclampsia and HELLP syndrome. For patients with pre-existing hypertension, management ideally commences prior to conception, and continues through pregnancy to the postnatal period. This book provides information on the evidence-based management of women with hypertension throughout pregnancy, supported by important background information on the etiology, risk-factors and pathophysiology of these disorders. Illustrated with accompanying algorithms, tables and lists for quick reference on diagnostic criteria, drugs and side-effects, this book will help clinicians rapidly gain access to the information they need to care for these patients. This will to be of interest to all grades of obstetric trainees as well as specialists, obstetric anesthetists and anesthetic trainees, midwives and maternal-fetal physicians.

Hypertension
Carmel McEniery, Ian B. Wilkinsone altri
editore: Oxford University Press
pagine: 336
The investigation and treatment of hypertension, a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease throughout the world, remains a challenge, even in developed countries. Although antihypertensives have been available for 50 years, the rational and effective use of the myriad of existing drugs remains a concern, as does the desire to identify patients with secondary hypertension from the mass of individuals with primary or essential hypertension. The aim of this handbook is to provide state-of-the-art information concerning the pathophysiology, diagnosis, investigation and management of hypertension in the 21st century. The book covers the underlying physiological, genetic and environmental components which may contribute towards its pathogenesis as well as the currently available therapies and clinical trials in hypertension. The chapters are clearly laid-out and written for the non-expert but contain sufficient detail to serve as a useful reference for the experienced physician. The book is completely up-to-date and evidence-based, while the authors are recognized experts in hypertension based at one of Europe's leading hypertension centres.
Chesley's Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy
F. Gary Cunningham, James M. Robertse altri
editore: Academic Press Inc
pagine: 450
Hypertensive disorders remain one the major causes of maternal and fetal morbidity and death. It is also a leading cause of preterm birth now known to be a risk factor in remote cardiovascular disease. Despite this, the hypertensive disorders remain marginally studied, and their management is commonly controversial. Chesley's Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy remains one of the beacons to guide this field, recognized for its uniqueness and utility. The Third Edition continues this tradition, focusing on prediction, prevention, and management for clinicians, and is an essential reference text for clinical and basic investigators alike. Differing from other texts devoted to preeclampsia, it covers the whole gamut of high blood pressure, not just preeclampsia. NEW TO THE THIRD EDITION:*

Hypertension
Edward D. Frohlich, Hector O Ventura
editore: Clinical Publishing,an imprint of Atlas Medical Publishing Ltd
pagine: 144
Each volume in this new atlas series provides readers with a concise and carefully structured pictorial reference to the clinical manifestations of disease and the means by which the diagnosis may be confirmed. In this volume, the author begins by reviewing the basics of blood pressure measurement, clinical examination and assessment of risk factors, before moving on to review in turn the mechanisms that underlie the several different forms of hypertension, and the investigations that are appropriate to making a correct diagnosis in each case. The numerous clinical photographs are supported by a concise, knowledgeable text that highlights characteristic presenting signs, tests by which diagnoses may be confirmed and differentials excluded. Flowcharts, checklists and algorithms are used throughout to summarise key facts, and present the reader with a rapid reference to the diagnostic process. Tables summarising key data are also included, and all these features combine to provide a uniquely accessible reference to this most challenging disease.
