L’odontostomatologia è la branca della medicina che si occupa della prevenzione, della diagnosi e del trattamento medico e chirurgico delle patologie che colpiscono i diversi tessuti e strutture della cavità orale. In questa Unità sono approfonditi argomenti odontostomatologici di interesse e applicabilità pratica per tutti i medici veterinari, vale a dire la parodontologia e la chirurgia orale, e nello specifico le estrazioni, che spesso costituiscono il trattamento d’elezione anche per i denti parodontopatici. La Unità si apre con la descrizione della visita clinica, fornendo suggerimenti per condurre in maniera sistematica la valutazione delle strutture della cavità orale sia nel paziente vigile che nel paziente in sedazione o in anestesia generale. La parte dedicata alla parodontologia ha un taglio estremamente pratico, descrivendo nel dettaglio gli aspetti radiografici di parodontopatia, lo strumentario e il trattamento medico e strumentale della malattia. Fra le procedure specialistiche di chirurgia parodontale si dà spazio soprattutto alla gengivectomia, che è descritta passo passo, essendo di frequente esecuzione. La sezione sulle procedure estrattive illustra tra l’altro lo strumentario e il suo uso, le tecniche di estrazione a cielo chiuso e a cielo aperto, fornendo i mezzi che permettono al clinico di affrontare con la stessa sicurezza l’estrazione di un singolo dente e un’estrazione totale. La Unità è completata infine da alcuni allegati relativi ad argomenti di assoluta applicabilità pratica: l’anatomia descrittiva e chirurgica delle strutture orali e craniali, le tecniche di radiologia intraorale, gli aspetti anestesiologici specifici per gli interventi odontoiatrici e l’anestesia loco-regionale.
