La tecnica di sedazione cosciente, introdotta in Odontoiatria da Henry Langa negli anni settanta, ha avuto un'importante evoluzione negli ultimi decenni. Gli autori, che da oltre trent'anni si occupano di RA (Relative Analgesia -Analgesia Relativa) e sono ritenuti i maggiori esperti in Italia, hanno redatto per gli Odontoiatri italiani questa guida clinico pratica che tiene conto dello stato dell'arte della tecnica. Infatti con la larga applicazione clinica e lo sviluppo delle sedation machine, l'RA ha subito molte modifiche rispetto alla metodica originale proposta da Langa. Il manuale, arricchito da schemi e fotografie, mostra come l'RA sia la sedazione ideale in Odontoiatria per vari motivi: l'uso della sedation machine impedisce di sbagliare, il paziente è sempre iperossigenato, la durata della sedazione è quella desiderata (da pochi minuti a ore) ed il paziente può essere dimesso dopo 30'. L'RA inoltre può essere usata in adulti e bambini e, a parte i primi 3 mesi di gravidanza, non esistono controindicazioni al suo uso nel paziente in equilibrio cardiocircolatorio e respiratorio. Infine l'RA rieduca il paziente ad assumere l'autocontrollo desensibilizzandolo dall'ansia e aiutando nel contempo il rapporto odontoiatra-paziente.
