Interventional Pulmonology (IP) is currently experiencing a period of significant growth, driven by rapid technological advances, including the use of ultrasound, navigation systems, and robotics in bronchoscopy. As a result, it has become necessary to design and develop structured, competency-based training programs to be conducted in specialized, high-volume centers, enabling trainees to enhance and refine their knowledge in alignment with modern interventional techniques. This represents a demanding educational pathway, from specialization to ultra-specialization. The text has been developed by the faculty of the Master’s Program in Interventional Pulmonology at the University of Florence, now in its 17th edition, with the valuable contribution of participants from the most recent editions in Italian language. It is primarily intended for residents in Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery, as well as for specialists embarking on this demanding pathway through structured Master’s programs and courses, while also serving as a reference framework for more experienced professionals. This volume systematically addresses the concept of competence in Interventional Pulmonology following Miller’s framework, starting from the knowledge and skills required to achieve competence in each individual interventional procedure. It also provides information on training and assessment methods, along with a structured outline of the core curriculum for the Interventional Pulmonologist or Thoracic Endoscopist, intended to standardize training and to serve as a guide throughout the professional development.

This unique resource provides an all-in-one reference for diagnosing diseases of the airway. It offers a case-based review of the radiologic, bronchoscopic, and pathologic findings for the full range of neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders both common and uncommon. For each disease, it includes a case-based discussion, an anatomical black and white drawing for orientation, two black and white radiographs, two colour bronchoscopic views and a discussion of incidence, treatment, and prognosis. A bonus CD-ROM provides a video-based introduction to 16 invasive pulmonary procedures.
