Presentazione Più di dieci anni fa, a Vientiane con l’Orbis Flying Eye Hospital, stavo visitando dei pazienti insieme a un piccolo gruppo di oftalmologi del Sud-Est Asiatico provenienti da Laos, Cambogia, Vietnam, Thailandia e Myanmar. Una signora di mezza età arrivò con una densa vitreite e con l’oftalmoscopio indiretto riuscii a vedere attraverso la foschia una lesione maculare attiva da toxoplasmosi nel polo posteriore. Iniziammo a passare in rassegna gli antibiotici disponibili in quella parte del mondo e, per aiutare la discussione, mandai in autobus un pacco dell’ultima edizione di Wills Eye – Il Manuale.  Mentre sfogliavamo la sezione del libro sulla toxoplasmosi, mi accorsi di un turbinio di mormorii sommessi nella stanza e alzai lo sguardo interrogativo verso il mio interprete per capire il motivo di tutto quel trambusto. “È il tuo libro”, mi ha spiegato, “tutti sono eccitati all’idea di vederlo. Una volta ne hanno visto una copia fotocopiata a Bangkok”. Quanto sono stato orgoglioso di dire al gruppo entusiasta che avevamo una vera copia di Wills Eye – Il Manuale per ciascuno di loro, portata da Philadelphia! La loro palpabile gioia fu un dono speciale reciproco. Quell’orgoglio ritrova la sua eco oggi, mentre sfoglio la nuova edizione di quella che è diventata un’opera standard del Canone Oculistico, il libro più venduto nel nostro campo in tutto il mondo, compilato originariamente da un mucchio di note utili messe insieme da due residenti di Wills, Chris Rapuano e Marc Friedberg. Questo straordinario compendio tascabile, condiviso con i loro colleghi specializzandi per essere consultato mentre lavoravano in clinica e al pronto soccorso, è diventato il primo manuale pubblicato nel 1990.
