In primo luogo, avendo come obiettivo i professionisti impegnati "sul campo", continuiamo a presentare i principi base dell'ostetricia - l'anatomia materna e la fisiologia, la cura preconcezionale e prenatale, il travaglio, il parto e il puerperio - passando attraverso una dissertazione dettagliata delle complicanze ostetriche che si verificano in caso di parto pretermine, emorragie, ipertensione e così via. Ancora una volta, poniamo l'accento sull'analisi delle evidenze scientifiche dell'ostetricia clinica, con particolare attenzione ai principi biochimici e fisiologici della riproduzione femminile.
