Questo libro è stato pubblicato per la prima volta più di quaranta anni fa ed è stato al servizio di parecchie generazioni di studenti. È stato tradotto in quindici lingue. Questa nuova undicesima edizione comprende numerose innovazioni. Prima di tutto ci sono molte più domande a scelta multipla, impostate in modo da mettere alla prova più il ragionamento che dati mnemonici. Un’ampia appendice fornisce risposte dettagliate alle domande. Ad ogni capitolo sono stati aggiunti gli obiettivi formativi e vari punti nel testo sono stati estesi per spiegarne meglio il signifi cato. Le quattordici lezioni da 50 minuti su You-Tube sono tratte dal materiale presentato in questo testo e hanno riscontrato il favore degli studenti. Per prima cosa, il libro è destinato agli studenti di medicina e di materie sanitarie. Come tale sarà normalmente usato insieme a un corso di lezioni, come avviene all’UCSD. Infatti, la prima edizione è stata scritta perché ritenevo che allora non ci fosse alcun libro adatto per il primo anno del corso di fi siologia.In secondo luogo, il libro è stato scritto come un ripasso per i medici interni e per i colleghi di pneumologia, anestesiologia e medicina interna, specialmente per prepararli agli esami di abilitazione e ad altri esami. Qui le esigenze sono piuttosto diverse. Il lettore ha familiarità con l’argomento generale, ma ha bisogno di rinfrescarsi la memoria su vari argomenti e i molteplici diagrammi didattici sono particolarmente importanti.Può essere utile aggiungere qualche parola su come il libro si integri con le lezioni per gli studenti del primo anno di medicina alla UCSD. Le lezioni di fi siologia respiratoria sono solo dodici di circa 50 minuti, integrate da due esercitazioni, tre discussioni a piccoli gruppi e una sessione di revisione con l’intera classe. Le lezioni seguono strettamente i singoli capitoli del libro, con la maggior parte dei capitoli che corrispondono a una sola lezione. Le eccezioni sono il Capitolo 5, che ha due lezioni (una su scambio normale di gas, ipoventilazione e shunt; un’altra sul diffi cile argomento del rapporto tra ventilazione e perfusione); il Capitolo 6, che ha due lezioni (una sul trasporto di gas nel sangue e un’altra sull’equilibrio acido-base); il Capitolo 7, che ha due lezioni (sulla statica e sulla dinamica). Non ci sono lezioni sul Capitolo 10, “Prove di funzionalità polmonare”, perché questo non fa parte del tema centrale del corso.
