La gerontologia è la scienza dell’invecchiamento, complesso processo multifattoriale la cui caratteristica principale è la progressiva perdita funzionale, pluriorgano e plurisistemica, determinata dalla inevitabile usura del tempo. Si caratterizza per l’ampia variabilità fenotipica e, se non adeguatamente trattato, conduce ad una maggiore suscettibilità, in un’ampia fascia di popolazione, alla multipatologia e nel contempo ad un fenotipo atipico, rispetto all’età giovanile-adulta, di molte condizioni patologiche. La variabilità fenotipica è dovuta prevalentemente alla discrepanza tra età biologica ed età cronologica. Per età biologica o fisiologica si intende l’età che si può attribuire al singolo individuo sulla base delle condizioni funzionali rispetto a valori standard di riferimento. Un’età biologica più giovane rispetto a quella cronologica caratterizza il fenotipo di invecchiamento in salute o in benessere. Il contrario avviene per invecchiamento accelerato e patologico.
