Werner & Ingbar's The Thyroid

A Fundamental and Clinical Text

David S. Cooper, Lewis E. Braverman

editore: Lippincott Williams and Wilkins

pagine: 912

Werner & Ingbar's The Thyroid: A Fundamental and Clinical Text, 10th Edition has been extensively revised and streamlined to deliver the most comprehensive coverage of the thyroid including anatomy, development, biochemistry, physiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of all thyroid disorders. Entirely new chapters on the surgical management of thyroid cancer, thyroid disruptors, and thyroid hormone analogs are in this edition. New authors and an international group of contributors elevate this classic text that includes extensive clinical coverage of thyroid dysfunction's effects on other organ systems. Also addressed are clinical controversies regarding the ageing thyroid, subclinical hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism and thyroid disease in pregnancy. New to this edition: twenty-three chapters authored by new contributors and international experts; a companion website with fully searchable text for quick reference; and three new chapters discuss surgical management of thyroid cancer, thyroid disruptors, and thyroid hormone analogs to keep you up-to-date on the latest advances in the field. "This is an update of the classic thyroid text and is clearly essential for endocrinologists and thyroid surgeons. It is certainly useful for those undertaking thyroid related research but it is clearly far too detailed for students other than those undertaking basic science research in the thyroid. This edition has added the surgical management of thyroid disorders which is clearly an asset for the endocrine surgeon. With this type of reference text it is inevitable that there will be information from many years ago cited. There has however been a clear effort to update information and expand detail including more up-to-date references - studies related to markers of disease progression in thyroid cancer, cytopathology of thyroid cancer. Studies and other works that are references are of high quality and in general integral to the subject matter being discussed. There has also been a clear effort made to critically appraise the texts being cited. In general it is well written. Sections of the book can be a little monotonous only due to the subject matter i.e. thyroid hormone synthesis and thyroglobulin structure, function and biosynthesis. The diagrams and illustrations particularly in the basic science section are very useful. The use of colour images would have made them a lot more pleasing on the eye. Only for those subspecializing in thyroid disorders or conducting research into the thyroid gland. This book has helped me to understand the thyroid gland further and will continue to do so. It is the type of book one consults to answer a specific question and to provide context for a clinical problem." (BMA Medical Book Award reviewer, 2013 BMA Medical Book Awards).

Thyroid Cancer

Glenn D. Braunstein

editore: Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

pagine: 332

The American Cancer Society recently estimated that about 45,000 new cases of thyroid cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, with three-quarters occurring in women. The overall 5-year survival rate is about 97 per cent, making it one of the least lethal cancers. We are experiencing an epidemic of well-differentiated thyroid cancer, in part due to the widespread use of imaging modalities that detect thyroid nodules and microcarcinomas. Concurrently, there have been a number of recent advances in surgical treatment, as well as diagnostic modalities that allow us to detect small amounts of residual local and metastatic disease. Additionally, a reexamination of past treatment regimens has led to new recommendations regarding the use of radioactive iodine, and to new therapeutic options, such as targeted therapy which have supplanted the use of more toxic chemotherapy for metastatic cancer. Multiple academic organizations have developed consensus guidelines for the management of thyroid cancer, occasionally with conflicting recommendations. In "Thyroid Cancer", a renowned group of authors presents a broad overview of the pathology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of thyroid cancer, with an emphasis on recent evidence-based information. State-of-the-art and a significant contribution to the literature, "Thyroid Cancer" is an invaluable reference for endocrinologists, oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, radiation oncologists, primary care physicians, and surgeons who deal with head and neck cancer.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology

Definitions, Criteria and Explanatory Notes

Edmund S. Cibas, Syed Z. Ali

editore: Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

pagine: 188

This atlas is the offspring of the "The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) State of the Science Conference," hosted by the NCI and organized by Dr. Andrea Abati. Preparations for the conference began 18 months earlier with the designation of a steering committee and the establishment of a dedicated, p- manent web site. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of "Nondiagnostic," "Benign," "Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm", "Suspicious for Malignancy," and "Malignant," and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of "undetermined significance," which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.

Thyroid Disease

A Case-based and Practical Guide for Primary Care

Emanuel O. Brams

editore: Humana Press Inc.

pagine: 172

Thyroid Disease: A Case-Based and Practical Guide for Primary Care, by Dr. Emanuel Brams, is a supremely readable cased-based approach to understanding the myriad of disorders that encompass thyroid disease. Using cases derived from his busy practice, Dr. Brams gives us the history and physical examination details of each case, along with test results. Then, through a series of questions similar to that which any good clinician asks while caring for a patient, Dr. Brams explains an optimal approach to diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of thyroid disease, with an emphasis on the practical and common issues that primary care physicians see in their offices. This is an important book for primary care physicians because thyroid disease is common in the population we take care of and accounts for 3-5% of primary care visits. It is often cited as an area that primary care phy- cians find confusing. Dr. Brams clarifies thyroid disease and, through his generous sharing of cases, allows us to join him in making clear diagnoses as well as share in the ambiguity and decisions about approach when the diagnoses and course of treatment are not clear. In this way, the book is honest, and deals directly with the issues of thyroid disease as they are seen by us as physicians, not as we sometimes may wish they were seen if patients presented with the clarity of walking textbooks. Thyroid Cancer

F. Grunwald, H. J. Biersack

editore: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K

pagine: 386

"Thyroid Cancer" describes all current diagnostic techniques, including FDG-PET and MRI. In recent years, these modalities have documented hitherto hidden radioiodine-negative metastases, thus improving surgical therapy. The whole gamut of treatment, including surgery, radioiodine therapy, percutaneous radiation therapy and medical management, is covered. In some 10 per cent of differentiated thyroid cancers, the well-known treatment tools of surgery and radioiodine therapy are not sufficient. New treatment modalities such as high-dose radioiodine therapy, redifferentiation therapy with retinoic acid and recombinant TSH are therefore highlighted. In a special section devoted to medullary thyroid cancer, new imaging procedures such as octreotide scintigraphy are described. The second edition includes two new chapters, on I-124 PET and dosimetry. Other chapters have been modified particularly in view of the new UICC classification, with special regard to the definition of T1 tumors.

Diseases of the Thyroid

Lewis E. Braverman

editore: Humana Press Inc.

pagine: 395

In the past five years, so much additional progress has been made in ourunderstanding of both the basic and c1inical aspects of a wide variety of thyroid disorders that a second edition of Diseases of the Thyroid was considered a necessary addition to the Contem- porary Endocrinology series. Fresh perspectives also seemed warranted, so we recruited new authors for many of the chapters and believe that this edition will provide the reader with further insights into the pathophysiology and c1inical presentation and treatment of thyroid disease. It inc1udes topics ranging from neonatal thyroid screening, thyroid dysfunction during infancy and childhood, peripartum thyroid disorders, thyroid disease in the elderly, and the c1inical relevance of the sodiurnliodide symporter (NIS) to the pathogenesis and treatment of nodular goiter, thyroid cancer, thyrotoxicosis, and hypothyroidism. The worldwide problem of iodine deficiency and its eradication is also discussed, along with environmental goitrogens and iodine-induced thyroid disease. I am indebted to all the contributors for their cooperation and expertise in providing their chapters in an extremely timely fashion, to Mr. Thomas Moore and Mr. Craig Adams from Humana Press for their expert assistance, and to Ms. Christine Archung for providing superb administrative assistance.
