AOSpine Masters Series Vol. II Primary Tumors

Charles G. Fisher, Luiz Roberto Gomes Vialle

editore: Thieme Medical Publishers Inc

pagine: 216

This second volume in the AOSpine Masters Series balances critical appraisal of current evidence in spine oncology with the opinions of experienced spine surgeons to create a unique clinical reference for spine oncology surgeons. The book provides expert guidance to help clinicians make the right treatment decisions and provide the best care for their patients. The chapters have been written and researched by key leaders in spine oncology and range from general evaluation, staging, and decision making principles to histology-specific oncologic patient management. Key Features: Editors are internationally-recognized authorities on the treatment of primary spine tumors Synthesizes the best available evidence and consensus expert advice on primary spine tumors, leading to optimal clinical recommendations Each chapter includes clinical pearls, tips on complication avoidance, and top 5 must-read references The AOSpine Masters Series, a co-publication of Thieme and the AOSpine Foundation, addresses current clinical issues whereby international masters of spine share their expertise and recommendations on a particular topic. The goal of the series is to contribute to an evolving, dynamic model of an evidence-based medicine approach to spine care. All neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neuro-oncologists, and orthopedic oncologists specializing in spine, along with residents and fellows in these areas, will find this book to be an excellent resource that they will often refer to in their treatment of patients with primary tumors of the spine.

Bone Cancer

Progression and Therapeutic Approaches

Dominique Heymann

editore: Academic Press Inc

pagine: 504

The epidemiological and clinical importance of bone metastasis has long been recognized, but the past decade has seen an explosion in the fields of bone biology and bone cancer research. This period of time has been marked by a number of key discoveries that have led to the opening up of entirely new areas for investigation as well as new therapies which combine surgery and biological therapeutic approaches. Bone is a common site of cancer metastases - cancer cells commonly develop in bone and spread to other organ systems through the bloodstream. For example, the incidence of bone metastases in breast and prostate cancers is 70 per cent, whereas it is only 30 to 40 per cent in metastatic lung cancer. In clinical terms, bone metastases have substantial negative effects on a patient's quality of life and are a main cause of patient mortality. Given the global prevalence of breast and prostate cancers, knowledge of bone biology has become essential for the medical and cancer research communities. This book provides, all in one resource, the most recent data on bone cancer development (cellular and molecular mechanisms), genomic and proteomic analyses, and clinical analyses (histopathology, imaging, and pain monitoring), as well as new therapeutic approaches and clinical trials for primary bone tumors and bone metastases. This book presents a comprehensive, translational source for all aspects of bone cancer in one reference work. Bone cancer experts (from all areas of research and practice) take readers from the bench research (cellular and molecular mechanism), through genomic and proteomic analysis, all the way to clinical analysis (histopathology and imaging) and new therapeutic approaches. Clear presentation by bone biologists of the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying bone tumors and bone cancer metastasis as well as the genomic and proteomic assays used in detecting cancer within given organ systems. Clear presentation by oncologists and radiologists of how histopathology, imaging, and pain monitoring can lead to new therapeutic approaches Benefit. This title saves researchers and clinicians time in quickly accessing the very latest details on a broad range of bone cancer issues, as opposed to searching through thousands of journal articles. It provides a common language for cancer researchers, bone biologists, oncologists, and radiologists to discuss bone tumors and how bone cancer metastases affects each major organ system. Correct diagnosis (and therefore correct treatment) of cancer depends on a strong understanding of the molecular basis for the disease - both oncologists and radiologists will benefit. Bone biologists will gain insight into how clinical observations and practices can feed back into the research cycle and will, therefore, be able to develop more targeted genomic and proteomic assays.

Treatment of Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas

editore: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K

pagine: 384

Bone and soft tissue sarcomas represent only about 2 per cent of all malignancies; however, their treatment - with the goal of curing the patient while preserving the functionality of the affected body part - can, unlike other malignancies, only be successful with therapy concepts devised by interdisciplinary teams. This volume provides an extensive up-to-date overview of the specific diagnostics and current treatment standards of these rare entities, presenting the various limb-sparing modalities for patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas with special regard to innovative reconstructive options. The evaluation of quality of life based on validated scores and the individual methods of coping with the illness through creative artistic projects are also acknowledged and integrated in the whole concept.

Orthopaedic Oncology

Diagnosis and Treatment

Ernest U. Conrad

editore: Thieme Medical Publishers Inc

pagine: 320

Orthopaedic Oncology: Diagnosis and Treatment is a complete reference for handling the full range of musculoskeletal tumors frequently encountered in the clinical setting, from osseous tumors in the upper extremity, to soft-tissue tumors of the pelvis. The first section presents the principles of initial assessment, guiding the clinician through key questions for developing the differential diagnosis and selecting the imaging modality and surgical technique. The second part of this book presents sarcoma case reports that cover tumor pathologies in different anatomic locations. Each case report contains succinct descriptions of presenting history, differential diagnosis, anatomic and imaging issues, biopsy techniques, pathologic diagnosis and grading, treatment options, surgical details, preferred treatment, pearls, and pitfalls. Features: * A comprehensive collection of cases presented according to anatomic location * Special emphasis on the significance of a tumor's initial presentation and its implications for surgical treatment * Clinical insights for tailoring treatment plans to the patient's particular condition, such as determining when neoadjuvant chemotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy are indicated * Current information about the use of positron emission tomography (PET) for tumor grading * Recommendations for avoiding complications and managing potential pitfalls * More than 300 images and illustrations that demonstrate key concepts This book is an indispensable resource for orthopedists, oncologists, as well as radiologists and pathology specialists treating patients with bone and soft-tissue tumors.
