Presentazione dell’edizione italianaNegli anni ho letto e studiato svariati testi inerenti al sistema nervoso periferico e, come indicato dallo stesso John Gibbons, la caratteristica che colgo maggiormente da questo elaborato è la semplificazione dei concetti che lo scrittore intende trasmetterci. Nella stesura del primo capitolo si evincono le difficoltà incontrate dall’autore seguendo lezioni universitarie di neurologia molto complesse; questo ricordo è stato sapientemente conservato al fine di proporre un testo che fosse utile e comprensibile a coloro che si approcciano in modo pragmatico alla materia. La struttura iniziale di questo manoscritto introduce l’essenziale componente neuroanatomica, che fungerà da fondamenta al termine vero e proprio di “neurologia”, ed il funzionamento della macchina uomo; quest’ultimo nasce sostanzialmente da un impulso elettrico qui sintetizzato a partire da argomenti strutturati quale il potenziale d’azione e la pompa sodio-potassio, passando dalla funzione delle sinapsi e dei neurotrasmettitori, per giungere infine a quei preziosi test usufruibili giornalmente dall’operatore sanitario al quale il paziente si rivolge. Il linguaggio e lo spirito del libro sono diretti e piacevolmente assimilabili nonostante si proponga un insieme concettuale corposo nella sua globalità e complesso nei suoi significati. L’enfatizzazione di un razionale sostanziale, che il lettore fa rapidamente proprio, porta magistralmente a quella pragmaticità che spesso occorre e che frequentemente si ottiene assicurandosi un certo grado di flessibilità utile ai fini del quotidiano. I capitoli sono strutturati in modo da concepire una progressiva conoscenza della materia allontanandosi parzialmente dalla complessità per incontrare fedelmente la praticità. L’autore semplifica, senza distanziarsi dal cuore dei concetti basilari, identificando quelle condizioni che frequentemente si presentano presso i nostri studi professionali; il testo non eviscera volontariamente in modo dettagliato ed esteso la materia ma l’affronta tramite esempi visivi e componenti descrittive molto ben recepibili, anche da coloro che si approcciano da neofiti alla materia neurologica. Le illustrazioni esplicano a dovere quanto descrivibile tramite un’immagine, a partire dalla fisiologia per giungere ai test di differenziazione, oltre ad un “plus” video interattivo attivabile tramite QR code. Il testo fornisce inoltre molteplici caratteristiche patologiche, riguardanti i sintomi di riconoscimento, osservando la moltitudine di concetti inerenti alla neurologia e si avvale di tabelle riassuntive, al fine di schematizzazione, che sostengono ampiamente lo studente durante i propri studi. Le nozioni chiave, alla radice di un potenziale problema, saranno, a fine lettura, parte integrante del bagaglio concettuale del discente o del professionista sanitario. L’introduzione al patologico e i casi studio sono la componente che maggiormente mi ha colpito essendo entrambi di facile assimilazione e godibili per quella concretezza utile al fine dell’apprendimento e della spendibilità pratica; i pazienti, d’altro canto, si rivolgono al fisioterapista o all’osteopata per risolvere un problema che li affligge. Infine la diagnosi differenziale, ovvero quell’inestimabile comparazione tra segni e sintomi simili ma derivanti da patologie differenti; questo capitolo esplica con efficienza una vera e propria pietra miliare delle materie a carattere sanitario. La consapevolezza di non poter prendere in carico un paziente, destinandolo verso figure specialistiche maggiormente competenti, è compatibile con un vero e proprio successo terapeutico e, cosa non da poco, una seria dimostrazione di professionalità e preparazione. Un testo decisamente consigliabile a tutti quegli studenti e professionisti che desiderano approcciare una materia complessa quale la neurologia. La necessità di mettere in pratica gli insegnamenti partendo da una base che sfoltisca dubbi, a volte creati da un eccesso di particolari fisiologici ed anatomici, trova un deciso riscontro tra le pagine di questo elaborato.
