Ecografie e procedure intervenistiche percutanee: fegato, vie biliari e pancreas

Mirko D'Onofrio, Andrea Ruzzenente

editore: Springer Verlag

pagine: 152

Advances in Diagnostic Imaging

The Value of Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound for Liver

Jean-Michel Correas, Riccardo Lencioni
e altri

editore: Springer Verlag

pagine: 64

In recent years, the imaging-based diagnosis of mass liver lesions has become increasingly complex due to the number and morphological variability of lesions that modern imaging techniques are currently able to display. If the sensitivity in detection has greatly increased, characterisation has remained difficult and represents a critical challenge for the clinician. The availability of blood-pool contrast agents for ultrasound (US), in particular second-generation US contrast agents based on perfluorocarbon- or sulfur-hexafluoride-filled microbubbles, and the development of contrast-specific software and technologies have opened up new perspectives both for the immediate characterisation of any mass lesion detected in the liver and for increasing the sensitivity of US in the detection of liver metastases. Taking into account the great impact of this new technology on clinical practice, the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB) organised, in January 2004, in Rotterdam, a consensus meeting of experts in order to develop guidelines for the use of US contrast agents in the diagnosis of liver diseases . These guidelines, as well as discussions of further advances in the clinical application of contrast-enhanced harmonic US are presented in this book by an internationally renowned group of experts. The book represents provides an important starting point for clinical implementation of this new diagnostic procedure.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound in clinical practice. Liver, prostate, pancreas, kidney and lymph nodes

Thomas Albrecht, Lars Thorelius
e altri

editore: Springer Verlag

pagine: 70

The value of ultrasound contrast agents (USCA) in clinical practice depends on the pharmacokinetics, the signal processing, and the contrast-specific imaging modalities. USCA are exogenous non-toxic substances smaller than red blood cells, which after intravenous administration must be stable enough to pass through the pulmonary capillary bed and enter the blood pool producing the necessary contrast enhancement for the duration of the examination. Recently, second-generation agents, such as SonoVue (Bracco Imaging SpA,Milan,Italy),have been introduced into the market. These agents, taking advantage of the stability of their microbubbles, withstand the acoustic pressure of insonation much better than previous USCA,resulting in an increased half-life of the agent and thus in a prolonged diagnostic window. These agents are blood pool agents that remain in the intravascular compartment and do not leak into the organ tissue. Therefore, they are used to - crease the Doppler signal amplitude during their dynamic vascular phase. Concomitant with the improvement of contrast agents,d- ferent contrast-specific imaging modalities have been developed which, used in combination with USCA and a low mechanical - dex (MI),allow continuous real-time grey-scale imaging. These - cent technical improvements have opened new possibilities in the use of USCA in a variety of indications,as shown in the contributions contained in this book. In the following chapters, some of the most distinguished users of second-generation USCA will share their knowledge and experience. The first contributor is Dr. Thomas Albrecht,Department of - diology, University Hospital of Berlin, Germany.

Contrast Harmonic Imaging in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Hepatic Tumors

Masatoshi Kudo

editore: Springer Verlag, Japan

pagine: 283

Combining harmonic technology and an ultrasound contrast agent, harmonic imaging now plays a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of hepatic tumors. Contrast harmonic imaging is especially valuable in cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the incidence of which has risen dramatically in Europe, North America, and Asia in recent years. Harmonic imaging is bringing about revolutionary changes in the diagnosis and treatment of HCC, and this book provides the most up-to-date information and guidelines for effective use of this superior technique. Generously illustrated with photographs and diagrams, with accompanying text by a leading expert in the field, this acclaimed book is a valuable state-of-the-art resource for clinicians and researchers in radiology and internal medicine, including hepatology and gastroenterology.

Contrast-enhanced. Ultrasound of liver diseases

a cura di A. Solbiati, A. MarteganiE. Leen
e altri

editore: Springer Verlag

pagine: 135

The recent development of sonographic contrast agents (or "microbubbles") has stimulated increasingly intensive studies on the relationships between ultrasound and contrast media. As a result, contrast-specific hard- and software systems have been developed with impressive speed and a new imaging modality, "contrast-enhanced ultrasound" (CEUS), has been introduced. This book is the result of the collaboration of a group of "pioneers" of CEUS, who wish to give the reader a complete overview of second-generation contrast agents, to depict their clinical applications and to present the most updated contrast-specific software for noncardiologic uses, especially for the study of liver diseases. The contents and wealth of illustrations make this volume an invaluable resource for radiologists, hepatologists and oncologists in their everyday clinical practice.
