Istologia medica è un moderno testo maggiormente orientato in senso “medico”, al fine di fornire agli studenti gli strumenti per inquadrare la materia nell’ambito delle discipline precliniche. Il volume è stato suddiviso in blocchi di materiale didattico: - testo e figure - argomenti essenziali; - approfondimenti con figure - argomenti integrativi; - aree di istologia clinica - correlazioni fisiopatologiche; - contenuti extra nell'area web Virtual Campus - materiale integrativo disponibile in formato multimediale.  A ogni capitolo è premesso un paragrafo riguardante i Prerequisiti, cioè le conoscenze di base necessarie per un corretto inquadramento degli argomenti trattati, un paragrafo riguardante gli Obiettivi che lo studio dell’argomento si prefigge e un Sommario dell’argomento trattato e si conclude con Concetti chiave relativi agli argomenti trattati.  Gli argomenti sono stati sviluppati mettendo in risalto i meccanismi differenziativi che consentono, sia nella vita embrionale sia in quella adulta, il ricambio e l'integrazione di elementi cellulari staminali nel contesto di popolazioni specializzate in senso funzionale. Particolare attenzione è stata riservata alle proprietà biomeccaniche dei tessuti e alle proprietà delle diverse popolazioni di cellule staminali adulte, anche in considerazione del loro sempre maggiore impiego, anche in associazione con biomateriali, in medicina rigenerativa.
