IV edizione italiana sulla VIII internazionale a cura di Laura Amicone e Raffaele StrippoliLo studio della biologia cellulare è un compito arduo perché il campo è molto vasto e in rapida evoluzione, caratterizzato dalla continua esplosione di nuove informazioni. La sfida è padroneggiare i concetti fondamentali senza impantanarsi nei dettagli. Gli studenti devono comprendere i principi della biologia cellulare ed essere in grado di apprezzare i nuovi progressi, piuttosto che limitarsi a memorizzare “i fatti” come li vediamo oggi. Allo stesso tempo, il materiale deve essere presentato in modo sufficientemente approfondito da coinvolgere gli studenti in modo serio e fornire loro una solida base per ulteriori studi. Oltre a sottolineare i concetti fondamentali della biologia cellulare, l’ottava edizione di La cellula presenta nuove caratteristiche per soddisfare le esigenze degli studenti di oggi e dei loro docenti. Rimane immutato l’obiettivo di aiutare gli studenti a comprendere i principi e i concetti della biologia cellulare, nel contempo apprezzando l’entusiasmo e l’importanza della ricerca in atto in questo campo in rapida evoluzione. Gli importanti progressi compiuti negli ultimi anni hanno migliorato significativamente la nostra comprensione della biologia cellulare e molecolare e, pertanto, sono stati tutti considerati nell’edizione attuale. Alcuni dei progressi più notevoli sono correlati alla genomica e alla comprensione dei complessi meccanismi di regolazione genica negli eucarioti superiori. Un nuovo capitolo della presente edizione (Regolazione trascrizionale ed epigenetica) mette in evidenza queste aree in rapido avanzamento. Altri importanti progressi trattati in questa edizione riguardano la proteomica, la biologia di sintesi, la terapia sostitutiva mitocondriale, lo splicing nella terapia della distrofia muscolare di Duchenne e l’immunoterapia oncologica. Oltre a incorporare nuovo materiale, l’ottava edizione di La cellula è stata ampiamente rivista per migliorare la sua utilità come testo didattico per gli studenti di oggi. È ormai ben evidente che l’insegnamento delle scienze è più efficace quando ha come focus il coinvolgimento attivo degli studenti. Per facilitare questo ed evitare di sovraccaricare gli studenti con troppe informazioni, ho ridotto al minimo i dettagli non necessari, focalizzandomi sui concetti e accorciando il testo per renderlo più agile. Inoltre, considerando che la biologia cellulare è una materia che interessa studenti con background diversi, ho aggiunto ulteriore materiale introduttivo sulla natura dei legami chimici e della termodinamica. Anche queste aggiunte non hanno influito sulla lunghezza del testo, garantendone comunque l’accessibilità e la leggibilità per gli studenti universitari alla loro prima esperienza di studio della biologia cellulare e molecolare. La riorganizzazione di questa edizione comprende la divisione di ogni capitolo in paragrafi autonomi, che consentono ai docenti di cambiare facilmente l’ordine in cui il materiale è trattato. Per ottimizzare il coinvolgimento degli studenti, ogni paragrafo inizia con Obiettivi di apprendimento e include note a margine che mettono in evidenza i concetti chiave. Ogni capitolo si conclude con una sintesi e un’ampia serie di domande per paragrafo. Le domande in questa edizione sono improntate a diversi livelli della tassonomia di Bloom, che vanno dalla conoscenza e comprensione all’analisi e alla sintesi. Ogni capitolo è caratterizzato da articoli di Medicina molecolare e schede di Esperimento chiave, che evidenziano – rispettivamente - le applicazioni cliniche e i lavori di ricerca che ne sono alla base. A queste schede sono state aggiunte ulteriori domande, mirate a focalizzare l’attenzione sugli aspetti chiave del materiale presentato e dare agli studenti un’idea dei progressi nel nostro campo. Una caratteristica di questa nuova edizione è l’aggiunta della scheda Problemi correlati all’analisi dei dati, alla fine di ogni capitolo, con domande aperte sugli argomenti trattati in quello stesso capitolo (Sintesi). Questi quesiti, basati su dati tratti da ricerche originali, hanno lo scopo di coinvolgere gli studenti impegnandoli nell’analisi dei metodi sperimentali e dei risultati correlati. A conclusione del libro, dopo il Capitolo 20, è riportata una sezione (Risposte alle domande) in cui sono fornite le risposte alle domande. Come le schede Esperimento chiave e Medicina molecolare, la scheda Problemi correlati all’analisi dei dati fornisce materiale eccellente per stimolare gli studenti alla discussione e offrire loro ulteriori opportunità per partecipare all’apprendimento attivo. La mia speranza è che l’impostazione di questa nuova edizione del libro stimoli gli studenti e trasmetta loro l’entusiasmo per le sfide della biologia cellulare e molecolare contemporanea. Le opportunità nel nostro campo sono più grandi che mai e gli studenti di oggi saranno responsabili dei progressi di domani.

The first edition of The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology introduced a completely new paradigm for detecting bladder cancer by urine cytology. This system concentrated on defining morphological characteristics of the most clinically significant form of bladder cancer, High Grade Urothelial Carcinoma.
