Orell and Sterrett's Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology

Gregory F. Sterrett, Svante R. Orell

editore: Churchill Livingstone

pagine: 512

This is a major revision of the leading textbook of FNA cytology. Both text and illustrations provide a systematic and logical approach to the acquisition, interpretation and diagnosis of Fine Needle Aspirate biopsy specimens. "Orell's FNA Cytology" will assist in establishing diagnostic criteria and results in the examination of benign and malignant condition in all body systems where the technique is currently applied. The information is always presented in a clinical context: it details the role of FNA and other ancillary techniques in the investigative sequence (the cytological findings are always set in the context of the patient's clinical history, physical exam and other laboratory tests). It gives practical, technical advice on how to obtain good smears and alerts the reader as to possible diagnostic pitfalls and complications. The contents are organized in a framework of anatomical regions (rather than histopathological classifications) in order to reflect the way problems present in clinical practice. Each chapter is divided into two parts: the first deals with indications, accuracy, techniques and complications; the second illustrates the cytological patterns and their implication. Both common and rare conditions are covered.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology

Definitions, Criteria and Explanatory Notes

Edmund S. Cibas, Syed Z. Ali

editore: Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

pagine: 188

This atlas is the offspring of the "The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) State of the Science Conference," hosted by the NCI and organized by Dr. Andrea Abati. Preparations for the conference began 18 months earlier with the designation of a steering committee and the establishment of a dedicated, p- manent web site. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of "Nondiagnostic," "Benign," "Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm", "Suspicious for Malignancy," and "Malignant," and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of "undetermined significance," which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.

Fine-Needle Biopsy of Superficial and Deep Masses

Interventional Approach and Interpretation Methodology by Pattern Recognition

Giorgio Gherardi

editore: Springer Verlag

pagine: 208

Needle biopsy is a simple, reliable, inexpensive, well tolerated, and minimally invasive procedure for the diagnosis of tumors both in superficial and deep sites. In the new scenario determined by a more conservative approach to tumor treatment, and in the era of 'tailored' or 'targeted' oncological therapies the use of this technique is expected to increase dramatically for the diagnosis of neoplasia in all different phases of the disease. The efficacy of needle biopsy is, however, strongly influenced by the experience of the physician performing the technique and by the pathologist's attitude towards the interpretation of such minimal cellular harvest. Aim of this volume is to provide all possible clues for the optimization of the needle biopsy diagnosis. By using a problem-oriented approach, the best interventional maneuver and sample triage will be described for all types of lesions, and the interpretation of all possible cytological findings will be supported by the pattern analysis methodology. The reader will be guided to pattern recognition in the cellular sample and to provide the most correct interpretation, based on the integration with clinical and preanalytical data.

Atlas of Pancreatic Cytopathology with Histopathologic Correlations

Ralph H. Hruban, Syed Z. Ali
e altri

editore: Demos Medical Publishing

pagine: 208

Although there are a number of publications including pancreatic cytopathology, there is a void in current pathology literature for a practical and well-illustrated atlas. The atlas contains 450 high-resolution images (including images of the histopathologic and radiologic features of the lesions, which makes this volume equally attractive to cytopathologists and surgical pathologists alike). Clinical and radiologic examinations cannot reliably distinguish benign or inflammatory pancreatic disease from carcinoma. The increased use of pancreatic fine needle aspiration (FNA) along with advances in imaging techniques and the introduction of endoscopic ultrasound guidance have led to significantly better detection and recognition of pancreatic masses. Consequently, pancreatic cytopathology is integral to accurate pre-operative diagnosis-yet it is a challenging diagnostic area with a variety of potential pitfalls and 'look-alike' lesions. Skillful recognition and an awareness of the limitations of the procedure are essential in avoiding mis diagnosis of these dangerous lesions. "Atlas of Pancreatic Cytopathology with Histopathologic Correlations" fills a void in current pathology literature. With 450 high-resolution images, including images of histopathologic and radiologic features, this practical atlas presents an integrated approach to diagnostic cytopathology that will help physician cytopathologists, cytotechnologists, and pathologists avoid potential pitfalls and 'look-alike' lesions. Written by recognized experts in the field, the extensive high-resolution color images of the characteristic features of pancreatic disease are presented with detailed descriptions that cover classic features, diagnostic clues, and potential pitfalls. "Atlas of Pancreatic Cytopathology with Histopathologic Correlations" is a valuable resource for the seasoned cytopathologist, general and surgical pathologists, pathology trainees, and cytotechnologists.
