Pubblicato per la prima volta in tedesco nel 1963, Il vivente umano e la follia rappresenta una sintesi chiara e sistematica della riflessione filosofica di Erwin Straus (Francoforte 1891-Lexington 1975). Esponente della scuola fenomenologico-psichiatrica, cui appartennero autori come Ludwig Binswanger, Victor-Emil von Gebsattel, Eugène Minkowski, Straus si discosta dagli altri membri di tale scuola per un'attenzione rinnovata verso il mondo della vita, per un costante ritorno ai temi dell'animalità, della corporeità, sensoriale e motoria, per un approfondimento incessante della dimensione prelinguistica e preconcettuale, che accomuna l'esperienza umana e animale al di là di ogni idealizzazione della filosofia tradizionale, ma anche della fenomenologia coscienzialista ed esistenziale. Tramite l'analisi sistematica delle strutture a priori incorporate nelle diverse modalità sensoriali, questo scritto ha innanzitutto di mira la rifondazione della psichiatria sulla base di una nuova filosofia.
