Recent years have witnessed major advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer at both the molecular and cellular levels. These developments were based essentially on fundamental research which as yet has not be substantially translated into clinical practice. In parallel, however, important breakthroughs have also been made in the development of new treatments with significant implications for the management of these diseases.
