Il problema della diagnosi è una sorta di ombelico denso della psichiatria ma anche della psicologia, dove confluiscono tutte le discussioni, gli orientamenti, i punti di vista, spesso radicalmente differenti, che lacerano il tessuto teoretico, clinico e pragmatico di queste discipline. Esso è attraversato dalle questioni metodologiche, ontologiche e genericamente linguistiche che riguardano ogni tentativo nosografico. È attraversato dalle questioni etiche e terapeutiche che riguardano la relazione del sapere con una buona prassi clinica. È attraversato dalle questioni culturali che modulano le diverse tipologie e i diversi significati che il processo diagnostico può assumere. È attraversato dagli interrogativi sociali che riguardano le conseguenze nel mondo della vita della prassi diagnostica. È possibile che sia attraversato, infine, dalle pressioni strettamente economiche dovute alle innegabili influenze di attività produttive direttamente innestate sulle categorie diagnostiche. La suddivisione dei saggi che proponiamo nelle tre sezioni - riflessioni, clinica e cultura - è puramente operativa e non riflette in alcun modo il tentativo di semplificare la complessità dei singoli saggi perché parlare della diagnosi significa, anche nel caso dei discorsi più specificamente orientati, sfiorare tanti di quegli ambiti e toccare tante di quelle aperture da rendere disperato qualsiasi tentativo di classificazione tematica.
