pagine: 256
Case presentations review key elements of clinical evaluation and rational management in Hematology/Oncology that are not readily found in standard texts. A brief clinical vignette and a clinical photo are provided for each case, and the reader is encouraged to consider a differential diagnosis and formulate a plan for diagnosis and treatment. The next page reveals the correct diagnosis, discusses the disorder and the clinical course and outcome of the specific patient, and concludes with 3-4 clinical pearls distilled from the case.

In Chronic Leukemias and Lymphomas: Clinical Management, a panel of recognized experts in hematological oncology describe the unique biological features of indolent hematologic neoplasms, providing powerful insight into their clinical manifestation, highlighting potential targets for novel therapies, and distinguishing these disorders from aggressive lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease. In their integrated surveys of these chronic myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative disorders, the authors emphasize such unique entities as prolymphocytic leukemias and cutaneous lymphomas. Special emphasis is given to the mechanisms of disease progression with authoritative insights into the promising new era of antineoplastic pharmacology.

High-Dose Therapy with Stem Cell Transplantation
Wolfgang Schultze
editore: Blackwell Publishing Ltd
pagine: 240
High-dose therapy with allogeneic or autologous stem cell transplantation as well as additional supportive measures have brought important advances in the therapy of malignant diseases.Allogeneic and especially autologous peripheral blood stem cell grafting as opposed to allogeneic bone marrow transplantation is a subject of intensive research. * The scientific papers presented in this volume centre on haematological malignancies.* They are notable among the various current attempts to improve the therapy of cancer.* Novel treatment strategies are described, in which immunological techniques, the introduction of new pharmaceuticals, of biological factors and genetic engineering emerge as promising tools. The volume is a comprehensive account of the Workshop held in April 2001 in Bad Saarow/Berlin, Germany, the 5th of its kind in the past decade. With its international team of authors, the book presents the state of the art in the field of high-dose therapy of malignant and non-malignant diseases.
A Pocket Guide to Bisphosphonates in Clinical Practice
Prevention and Therapy of Bone Disorders
Bertha Frisch , Reiner Bartl
editore: Blackwell Science Ltd
pagine: 150
The potential capacity of the biphosphonates to intervene in osseous remodeling was recognized more than 30 years ago. The biphosphonates inhibit osteoclastic activity. In spite of advances in early detection, surgey, chemo-and radiotherapy, metastatic bone disease is still a major and in many cases intractable clinical problem. The biphosphonates are now the most effective agents in the management of bone metastases - as shown by trials in patients with breast and prostate cancer, and in multiple myeloma. Bone pain, new ostelytic events and pathologic fractures are decreased and complications associated with these events are avoided. Existing osteolytic lesions may even be reversed. New fields of indications of biphosphonates are shown to be in the adjuvant therapy of breast cancer and in stage 1 multiple myeloma to prevent skeletal destruction and also to inhibit tumor growth. Over the past few years the biphosphonates have proved their value also in many other conditions such as Paget's disease of bone, osseous disorders with an osteoclastic component leading to osteopenia/osteoporosis, in congenial, endocrine and metabolic disorders.
Perhaps, for the future and for the next millennium the most widespread and extensive use to these anti-osteoclastic component leading to osteopenia/osteoporosis, in congenial, endocrine and metabolic disorders. Perhaps, for the future and for the next millennium the most widespread and extensive use to these anti-osteoclastic agents will be in these disorders, and particularly in so-called primary osteoporosis which evenually effects anyone who lives long enough, causing widespread morbidity with drastic economic consequences both individually and nationally. The authors' aim is to provide an office and desk companion - comprehensive, concise, practical for easy reference - an up-to-date guide for prevention and therapy of skeletal complications whenever and wherever they occur in general and specialized medical practice.
Malignant Lymphomas
Michael S. Grossbard
editore: B.C. Decker Inc
pagine: 468
Malignant Lymphomas is a volume in the acclaimed American Cancer Society Atlas of Clinical Oncology series. Dr. Grossbard and his team have summarized current knowledge on the pathology, epidemiology, molecular biology, presentation and management of patients with both non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's disease. The experts address the disease group by type - indolent B-cell lymphoma, diffuse large cell lymphomas, Burkitt's/high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma - as well as the key therapies of chemotherapy, monoclonal antibody, radiation, vaccine, hematopoietic stem cell transplants and more. This text's multi-author approach is a necessity now that management and classification of lymphoma have grown so complex. Malignant Lymphomas will be a valuable resource in the practice of those seeing patients with the disease, as well as a springboard for the continued inquiry into advances being made into the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of lymphoma.
