Atlas of the Diabetic Foot

Eleftherios Dounis , N. Katsilambros
e altri

editore: John Wiley & Sons Ltd

pagine: 232

Many foot problems in diabetes can be prevented and often the patients are misdiagnosed, or inappropriately referred or treated. This title will be of immense use to the audience as work of reference. Diabetes mellitus is the lack of insulin leading to uncontrolled carbohydrate metabolism, the breakdown of starches and sugars into smaller units that can be used by the body for energy. Foot ulcers occur in about 15 per cent of diabetic patients in their lifetime and hospital admissions due to foot ulcers are very common. Foot problems mostly occur when there is nerve damage in the feet or when there is poor blood flow. It contains colour photos and pictures. There are examples for identification of the patients at risk for foot ulceration. It also includes prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Hypertension in Diabetes

Bryan A. Williams

editore: Informa Healthcare

pagine: 304

Diabetes mellitus, particularly non-insulin-dependent diabetes Type 2, is a common disease and, even though insulin has been around for seventy years, this endocrine disorder still reduces the life expectancy of diabetic patients because of the development of long-term complications, including hypertension. Hypertension occurs twice as often in diabetic patients as in non-diabetic ones. The combination of diabetes and hypertension creates a greater risk of coronary artery disease which is the major cause of death in westernized societies. Bryan Williams and his international team of collaborators provide the reader with their views for treatment of diabetes associated with hypertension and the prevention of subsequent coronary artery disease and other disorders.

Diabete e malattie cardiovascolari

M. T. Johnstone , A. Veves

editore: Verduci

pagine: 475

Diseases of the Thyroid

Lewis E. Braverman

editore: Humana Press Inc.

pagine: 395

In the past five years, so much additional progress has been made in ourunderstanding of both the basic and c1inical aspects of a wide variety of thyroid disorders that a second edition of Diseases of the Thyroid was considered a necessary addition to the Contem- porary Endocrinology series. Fresh perspectives also seemed warranted, so we recruited new authors for many of the chapters and believe that this edition will provide the reader with further insights into the pathophysiology and c1inical presentation and treatment of thyroid disease. It inc1udes topics ranging from neonatal thyroid screening, thyroid dysfunction during infancy and childhood, peripartum thyroid disorders, thyroid disease in the elderly, and the c1inical relevance of the sodiurnliodide symporter (NIS) to the pathogenesis and treatment of nodular goiter, thyroid cancer, thyrotoxicosis, and hypothyroidism. The worldwide problem of iodine deficiency and its eradication is also discussed, along with environmental goitrogens and iodine-induced thyroid disease. I am indebted to all the contributors for their cooperation and expertise in providing their chapters in an extremely timely fashion, to Mr. Thomas Moore and Mr. Craig Adams from Humana Press for their expert assistance, and to Ms. Christine Archung for providing superb administrative assistance. The Evidence Base for Diabetes Care

A-. L. Kinmonth , N. J. Wareham
e altri

editore: John Wiley & Sons Ltd

pagine: 796

This volume outlines what is meant by terms such as 'evidence based practice', 'systematic review', 'efficacy', 'effectiveness'. It summarises, in a systematic fashion, the current evidence on diabetes prevention and care to enable the reader to improve their professional practice. Furthermore, it promotes a critical attitude to the assessment of evidence and engenders enthusiasm for 'lifelong learning'. It also advises clinicians on what to do when there is little available evidence. Chapters consider the evidence base for the definition and classification of diabetes, as well as prevention, identification, treatment, education in IDDM and NIDDM. The final chapters look at the practical implications of translating this evidence into practice in different environments with different health care systems and different economic levels. * This is the first book to present an evidence-based approach to diabetes * Examines the evidence base for the definition and classification of diabetes, as well as prevention, iden tification, treatment, and education in IDDM and NIDDM * Looks at the practical implications of translating this evidence into practice in different environments * The editors are leaders in the move towards evidence-based diabetes care
