In questa opera i medici di famiglia spiegano che forse per gran parte dei diabetici la soluzione è nel riconoscere che il vero "centro" è il paziente stesso, e non il CAD; e che il MMG, più vicino al paziente-centro e alla famiglia, è forse colui che più può incidere sulle variabili "qualitative" che si frappongono tra i numeri della diagnosi e le decisive modifiche comportamentali. Il diabete è un esempio centrale della tendenza che unisce il predominio della tecnica, dei numeri ai rigidi protocolli. La diagnosi si basa su semplici regole matematiche (ad esempio: "almeno due glicemie uguali o superiori a 126 milligrammi"). Il monitoraggio poggia sui "pilastri" dei valori quantitativi dell'Emoglobina glicata e dell'LDL.
