Textbook of Palliative Medicine

(Vecchia Edizione)

Eduardo Bruera

editore: Hodder Arnold

pagine: 1024

Textbook of Palliative Medicine provides an alternative, truly international approach to this rapidly growing specialty. This textbook fills a niche with its evidence-based, multi-professional approach and global perspective ensured by the international team of editors and contributing authors. In the absence of an international curriculum for the study of palliative medicine, this textbook provides essential guidance for those both embarking upon a career in palliative medicine or already established in the field, and the structure and content have been constructed very much with this in mind. With an emphasis on providing a service anywhere in the world, including the important issue of palliative care in the developing nations, Textbook of Palliative Medicine offers a genuine alternative to the narrative approach of its competitors, and is an ideal complement to them. It is essential reading for all palliative care physicians in training and in practice, as well as palliative care nurses and other health professionals in the palliative care team. GERD

Reflux to Esophageal Adenocarcinoma

Parakrama T. Chandrasoma , Tom R. Demeester

editore: Elsevier Science Publishing Co Inc

pagine: 464

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is one of the most common maladies of mankind. Approximately 40% of the adult population of the USA suffers from significant heartburn and the numerous antacids advertised incessantly on national television represents a $8 billion per year drug market. The ability to control acid secretion with the increasingly effective acid-suppressive agents such as the H2 blockers (pepcid, zantac) and proton pump inhibitors (nexium, prevacid) has given physicians an excellent method of treating the symptoms of acid reflux. Unfortunately, this has not eradicated reflux disease. It has just changed its nature. While heartburn, ulceration and strictures have become rare, reflux-induced adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is becoming increasingly common. Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardia is now the most rapidly increasing cancer type in the Western world. The increasing incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma has created an enormous interest and stimulus for research in this area. GERD brings together a vast amount of disparate literature and presents the entire pathogenesis of reflux disease in one place. In addition to providing a new concept of how gastroesophageal reflux causes cellular changes in the esophagus, GERD also offers a complete solution to a problem that has confused physicians for over a century. Both clinical and pathological information about reflux disease and its treatment are presented. GERD is meant to be used as a comprehensive reference for gastroenterologists, esophageal surgeons, and pathologists alike. *Outlines how gastroesophageal reflux causes cellular changes in the esophagus *Brings together the pathogenesis of the disease in one source and applies it toward clinical treatment *Tom DeMeester is THE leading international expert on reflux disease; Parakrama Chandrasoma is one of the leading pathologists in the area *Book contains approximately 350 illustrations *Ancillary web site features color illustrations: www.chandrasoma.com

Preneoplasia of the Breast

A New Conceptual Approach to Proliferative Breast Disease

Werner Boecker

editore: Saunders (W.B.) Co Ltd

pagine: 608

Safe and accurate preoperative diagnosis of breast lesions is crucial to spare patients unnecessary, disfiguring operations. "Prenoeoplasia of the Breast" covers the clinical, radiological and histological diagnosis of benign proliferative breast disease and precursor lesions of breast cancer. It focuses on a new immunohistochemical method based on an innovative progenitor cell concept of breast epithelium that has been developed by Prof. Boecker, Prof. Schnitt and Prof. Silverstein. This technique can also be used for small samples (percutaneous core biopsy) and offers high specificity, and, therefore, provides a greater degree of diagnostic security. The practical applicability and interpretation of the technique are integrated into a comprehensive description of all benign and malignant noninvasive proliferative diseases of the breast, including: interpretation of histologic samples attained by stereotactic biopsy (including immunohistochemistry); comparison of radiologic and pathologic findings; and, action to be taken in the case of in-situ malignoma Treatment of DICS.

Handbook of Immunohistochemistry and in Situ Hybridization of Human Carcinomas

Molecular Genetics, Gastrointestinal Carcinoma, and Ovarian Carcinoma

M. A. Hayat

editore: Academic Press Inc

pagine: 608

Classical histology has been augmented by immunohistochemistry (the use of specific antibodies to stain particular molecular species in situ). Immunohistochemistry has allowed the identification of many more cell types than could be visualized by classical histology, particularly in the immune system and among the scattered hormone-secreting cells of the endocrine system. This book discusses all aspects of immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization technologies and the important role they play in reaching a cancer diagnosis. It provides step-by-step instructions on the methods of additional molecular technologies such as DNA microarrays, and microdissection, along with the benefits and limitations of each method. This is the only book available that translates molecular genetics into cancer diagnosis. The methods were developed by internationally-recognized experts and presented in step-by-step manner. The results of each Immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization are presented in the form of color illustrations.

Nutritional Oncology

David Heber , George L. Blackburn
e altri

editore: Academic Press Inc

pagine: 848

Nutritional oncology is an increasingly active interdisciplinary field where cancer is investigated as both a systemic and local disease originating with the changes in the genome and progressing through a multi-step process which may be influenced at many points in its natural history by nutritional factors that could impact the prevention of cancer, the quality of life of cancer patients, and the risk of cancer recurrence in the rapidly increasing population of cancer survivors. Since the first edition of this book was published in 1999, the idea that there is a single gene pathway or single drug will provide a cure for cancer has given way to the general view that dietary/environmental factors impact the progression of genetic and cellular changes in common forms of cancer. This broad concept can now be investigated within a basic and clinical research context for specific types of cancer. This book attempts to cover the current available knowledge in this new field of nutritional oncology written by invited experts. This book attempts to provide not only the theoretical and research basis for nutritional oncology, but will offer the medical oncologist and other members of multidisciplinary groups treating cancer patients practical information on nutrition assessment and nutritional regimens, including micronutrient and phytochemical supplementation. The editors hope that this volume will stimulate increased research, education and patient application of the principles of nutritional oncology. This book covers hot new topics of nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics in cancer cell growth. It includes new chapters on metabolic networks in cancer cell growth, nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics. It presents substantially revised chapters on breast cancer and nutrition, prostate cancer and nutrition, and colon cancer and nutrition. It includes new illustrations throughout the text, especially in the breast cancer chapter. It includes integrated insights into the unanswered questions and clearly defined objectives of research in nutritional oncology. It offers practical guidelines for clinicians advising malnourished cancer patients and cancer survivors on diet, nutrition, and lifestyle, and provides information on the role of bioactive substances, dietary supplements, phytochemicals and botanicals in cancer prevention and treatment.
