Intracranial Metastases

Current Management Strategies

Raymond Sawaya

editore: Blackwell Futura

pagine: 512

This is the first comprehensive textbook on intracranial metastases in over 20 years with an update on current methods for their management, including the use of newer technologies. Each of the various histological types of cancer metastasizing to the brain is presented separately in a detailed analysis and discussion. This volume includes a consideration of the epidemiology of brain metastases and the quality of life in patients who have them. Special topics not previously covered are reviewed, including metastasis to the skull base and strategies for preventing cancer from metastasizing to the brain. In this title, a novel feature is a chapter devoted to the use of recent techniques such as functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, MR spectroscopy (metabolite mapping), and dynamic susceptibility contrast imaging (regional cerebral blood volume mapping) to characterize brain metastases in terms of the sensorimotor perturbations they produce, their metabolic response to therapy, and their degree of vascularization, respectively.

Primary Tumours of the Central Nervous System

Jerome B. Posner , Lisa M. DeAngelis
e altri

editore: Taylor & Francis Ltd

pagine: 420

Brain tumors have a longstanding reputation for being intractable to therapy, and with evidence suggesting that the incidence of some brain tumors is increasing, this has become the most feared cancer. However, with improvements in imaging technologies, radiation therapy and chemotherapy , as well as a greater knowledge of the genetic causes of brain tumors, better diagnosis and treatment is available, providing a more optimistic outlook for patients. This book, written by leading professionals in the field of neuro-oncology, provides a valuable overview and presentation of the most up-to-date ideas in the diagnosis, treatment and management of intracranial tumors. Covering the most current diagnostic and therapeutic tools available including MRI, stereotactic needle biopsy, functional MRI, 3D conformal radiotherapy, radiosurgery, fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy, new chemotherapy agents and novel regimens, gene therapy and anti-angiogenesis factors, it will be of great interest to all.

Differential Diagnosis in Neuro-oncology

J. Jerzy Hildebrand , Michael Brada

editore: Oxford University Press

pagine: 310

Most neurological lesions in cancer patients are progressive, have a profound influence on the quality of life and can be fatal. Management of the situation requires rapid identification of the nature and location of the problem as the treatment outcome depends as much on the speed of diagnosis as on the subsequent therapy. While modern neuroimages provides invaluable clues to the diagnosis, they need to be interpreted in the light of clinical data. The clinical examination remains the cornerstone of the differential diagnosis of neurological lesions affecting the cancer patient. Neurological disorders are a consequence not only of primary tumours of the central and peripheral nervous system but also of systemic malignancy. One in five patients with disseminated malignancy develop neurological complications other than neurogenic pain. The majority of neurological problems are a direct consequence of metastatic disease or the result of metabolic disorders. However, some disorders are due to anti-neoplastic treatments or the administration of drugs. The incidence of CNS infections and vascular lesions is also increased in malignant disease, and a small proportion of neurological disorders are paraneoplastic, resulting from a remote effect of cancer on the nervous system. This book, written by a neurologist and an oncologist, aims to help the clinician to identify and locate the underlying neurological lesion in a cancer patient, and to make a quick therapeutic decision. Diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms are included with an emphasis on the more common and potentially treatable conditions. It should be read by neuro-oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation therapists, neurosurgeons and all those involved in the management of cancer patients.

Questo volume, insieme necessario e nuovo nel panorama della letteratura medica italiana, ne prende atto e presenta una revisione aggiornata e completa delle patologie del sistema nervoso centrale e periferico associate ai tumori e al loro trattamento.
