Malformations of the Nervous System

D. F. Swaab , Francois Boller
e altri

editore: Elsevier Health Sciences

pagine: 688

This is a further volume in the "Handbook of Clinical Neurology" (Series Editors: Michael J. Aminoff, Department of Neurology, University of California, San Francisco, USA; Francois Boller, Bethesda, USA; Dick F. Swaab, Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, Amsterdam, the Netherlands). The period of intrauterine and neonatal brain development is crucial for everything we will become and can accomplish in the rest of our life.In that short period of time the outline of the human brain develops into a tremendously complex organ consisting of 100 billion neurons, each making between 1000 and 100 000 contacts with other particular groups of neurons by means of some 100 000 km of nerve fibers. Each group of neurons should be born at the right moment, migrate to the site where they differentiate and make their specific contacts in a limited critical period of brain development in order to function later in a normal way. Building such a complex structure as the brain in such a brief period is certainly the most demanding task for nature. It is in fact a wonder that it does not often end with catastrophic failures in one of the numerous exactly timed and extremely complex processes; instead it mostly results in a healthy baby with good potential for the rest of its existence. This volume deals with those children in whom brain development has resulted in a malformation of the central nervous system. This field has recently gained exciting new insights, for instance from molecular genetics, which are integrated in this volume. Section I of this volume follows the new integrative classification and deals with midline hypoplasias, disorders of segmentation of the neural tube, hamartomatous disorders of cellular lineage, disorders of radial neuroblast migration and cerebral cortical architecture and other dysgeneses. Section II describes the different clinical manifestations of CNS malformation, followed by sections on diagnostic methods, management and treatment. (Taken from the foreword by the series editors.)

Atlas of Microsurgery of the Lateral Skull Base

Alessandra Russo , Essam Saleh
e altri

editore: Thieme Publishing Group

pagine: 408

Recent advances in skull base surgery are revolutionizing the field. Besides the critical location issue, the major problem in lateral skull base surgery is understanding the complex relations between the different structures of the region, requiring a deep knowledge of anatomy. Here is a new edition of the first full-color atlas to present a variety of step-by-step approaches to the temporal bone and lateral skull base. Each sequence is illustrated with vivid color of cadaver specimens (more than 350 in all) that show the extradural and intradural parts, including cerebral vessels and nerves. A unique demonstration of three-dimensional anatomy of the surgical field as seen by the surgeon adds to the realistic quality of the book. Indications, hints, and pitfalls, gained through the authors' actual clinical experience, complete this masterful work.

editore: Academic Press Inc

pagine: 600

Why a book on molecular neurology? Molecular neuroscience is advancing at a spectacular rate. As it does so, it is revealing important clues to the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of neurological diseases, and to the therapeutic targets that they present. Medicines work by targeting molecules. The more specific the targeting, the more specific the actions, and the fewer the side effects. This book highlights, for graduate and MD-PhD students, research fellows and research-oriented clinical fellows, and researchers in the neurosciences and other biomedical sciences, the principles underlying molecular medicine as related to neurology.Written by internationally recognized experts, this well-illustrated and well-referenced book presents the most up-to-date principles and disease examples relevant to molecular neurology, and reviews the concepts, strategies, and latest progress in this field. This book will interest anyone studying the molecular basis of neurology, or developing new therapies in neurology. It describes the newest, molecular aspects of neurological disorders. It provides an introduction to neurological disorders for basic scientists. It updates clinicians and clinical researchers on the most recent developments.

Cognition, Brain, and Consciousness

Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience

Bernard J. Baars , Nicole M. Gage

editore: Academic Press Inc

pagine: 568

This is a textbook for psychology, neuroscience, pre-medical students, and everybody interested in the neuroscience of cognition. A wave of new research is transforming our understanding of the human mind and brain. Many educational fields now require a basic understanding of the new topic of cognitive neuroscience. However, available textbooks are written more for biology audiences than for psychology and related majors. This text aims to bridge that gap. A background in biology of neuroscience is not required. The thematic approach builds on widely understood concepts in psychology, such as working memory, selective attention, and social cognition.Edited by two leading experts in the field, the book guides the reader along a clear path to understand the latest findings. A support website provides all figures in electronic format with export to Powerpoint, as well as supplementary material including movies and support material for teachers and students. (note: support website will be available after June 10, 2007). It is written specifically for psychology, pre-medical, education and neuroscience undergraduate and graduate students. The thematic approach builds on accepted concepts, not presuming a background in neuroscience or biology. Ancillary material includes a companion website and Learning Guide for students. It includes two Appendices on brain imaging and neural networks written by Thomas Ramsoy and Igor Aleksander. It introduces the brain in a step-by-step, readable style, with gradually increasing sophistication. It is richly illustrated in full color with clear and detailed drawings that build the brain from top to bottom, simplifying the layout of the brain for students. The pedagogy includes exercises and study questions at the end of each chapter, including drawing exercises.g
