Learning Neuroimaging

Francisco de Asis Bravo-Rodriguez , L. Celso Hygino Cruz
e altri

editore: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K

pagine: 240

This book is intended as an introduction to neuroradiology and aims to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of this highly specialized radiological subspecialty. One hundred illustrated cases from clinical practice are presented in a standard way. Each case is supported by representative images and is divided into three parts: a brief summary of the patient's medical history, a discussion of the disease, and a description of the most characteristic imaging features of the disorder. The focus is not only on common neuroradiological entities such as stroke and acute head trauma but also on less frequent disorders that the practitioner should recognize. Learning Neuroimaging: 100 Essential Cases is an ideal resource for neuroradiology and radiology residents, neurology residents, neurosurgery residents, nurses, radiology technicians, and medical students.

Principles of Posterior Fossa Surgery: Surgical Management

Anil Nanda

editore: Thieme Medical Publishers Inc

pagine: 272

It was a pleasure to review this book, which is very comprehensive in its coverage on the diagnosis, management, and prognosis of diseases of the posterior fossa. This book has described extensively and accurately the anatomical aspects of posterior fossa through skull base and intraoperative images, with apt correlation to the radiological imaging. This correlation enables the reader to understand and remember better the normal anatomy of posterior fossa. -- American Journal of Neuroradiology The ability to operate successfully in the posterior fossa requires a thorough understanding of its neuroanatomy and physiology, accurate localization of lesions, and optimal surgical technique. Principles of Posterior Fossa Surgery provides an in-depth review of this complex surgical region, with detailed coverage of anatomy, pathology, imaging, disease-based management, and surgical approaches. Written by a team of highly respected specialists, it will be a valued reference and refresher for clinicians who perform posterior fossa surgery, as well as for trainees. Special Features: * Begins with a useful framework in neuroimaging, neuropathology, and microsurgical anatomy of the posterior cranial fossa * Covers a wide range of approaches and pathologies in the region, including congenital Chiari malformations, infections, trauma, aneurysms, and tumors * Highlights the anatomy of common surgical approaches, with numerous radiographic and endoscopic images that aid in visualizing concepts * Provides full coverage of surgical techniques, starting with basic concepts and progressing to operations on more challenging entities like petroclival meningiomas, jugular bulb tumors, acoustic neuromas, complex basilar aneurysms, and posterior circulation aneurysms * Includes comprehensive sections on surgical management of pediatric posterior fossa tumors and shunt surgery for lesions * Shares the insights of prominent neurosurgeons from top centers around the world, who discuss their preferred strategies for tackling this challenging area of the brain Focusing solely on the posterior fossa, this book fills an important gap for neurosurgeons, skull base specialists, and residents and fellows who are training in this anatomically challenging region. It will enrich their understanding and knowledge of the field, expand their surgical armamentarium, and help achieve the most successful clinical outcomes.

The Neurologic Diagnosis

Jack N. Alpert

editore: Springer Verlag New York Inc.

pagine: 314

Neurology has been viewed as the study of the source of humanity. Personality, intelligence, and mood alterations are manifestations of brain function or dysfunction. Neurology has also been bedeviled with an unjustified assumption that diseases of the nervous system are observable but untreatable. This misconception has been handed down through generations of medical students because of the dearth of sufficient instruction in the early years of medical school. Furthermore, it is commonly asserted that neurologic diseases are uniquely incurable. This fallacious argument, often promulgated by poorly educated physicians, conveniently forgets that most illnesses are incurable. Only when physicians have been in practice for a few years do they recognize the importance of neurologic symptoms and their inability to analyze them. The Neurologic Diagnosis: Practical Strategies for Medical Students and Residents is an introductory text that simplifies the often unwieldy method of making a neurologic diagnosis. Medical students are often intimidated by a deluge of data, extensive differential diagnoses, and have no organizational structure to follow. Diagnostic techniques of general medicine are not applicable. Neurology is a unique specialty since it requires the intermediary step of an anatomic diagnosis prior to proffering a differential diagnosis. Yet the required knowledge of neuroanatomy need not be profound for the student who will specialize in any field other than neurology and neurosurgery. This text is directed to medical students and residents who will all be regularly faced with numerous patients who have neurologic symptomatology. Typical one-month neurology rotations out of four years of medical school is clearly inadequate training to make a cogent neurologic diagnosis, especially since subsequent instruction is commonly provided by upper level residents who have the same background and numerous misconceptions. This is not a comprehensive text. The emphasis in this concise and practical title is on establishing a neuroanatomic diagnosis before formulating a differential diagnosis. In addition, treatment is seldom discussed since it is likely to change radically over time. Focused and succinct, The Neurologic Diagnosis: Practical Strategies for Medical Students and Residents is an invaluable resource for medical students and residents interested in the practice of neurological diagnosis.

Diagnostic Imaging of the Head and Neck

MRI with CT & PET Correlations

Anton N. Hasso

editore: Lippincott Williams and Wilkins

pagine: 560

This is a single-authored, clinically oriented text on imaging of the head-and-neck, frequently a difficult area for radiology residents and general radiologists to master. Readers will find key diseases highlighted and a guide to differential diagnosis of various conditions. Though the primary image focus is on MRI, correlations with CT and PET images and strong coverage of anatomic variants - to distinguish those from the presence of disease - are major strengths of the book. Other features include excellent image quality, diagrams and tables. While this text does not replace the need for a comprehensive text, it should be an essential resource at the reading station and on rotation.

"Teaching Files" are one of the hallmarks of radiology education, providing the kind of personal consultation with experts normally found only in the setting of a teaching hospital. This teaching file contains 164 cases, covering all areas of head and neck imaging. A consistent format is used to present each case. Chapters are organized by anatomical region. Included are cases on the temporal bone, skull base, eye and orbit, sinuses and nasal cavity, neck, trachea, salivary glands, hypopharynx and cervical esophagus, oropharynx and larynx. The book can be used both as an independent study and review tool for board-exam preparation and as a companion to Dr. Mancuso's majesterial, two-volume text, "Head and Neck Radiology" (2010), chapters from which are referenced following each case for further reading. Brain Mapping

Hugues Duffau

editore: Springer Verlag GmbH

pagine: 392

The goal of this book is to make a link between fundamental research in the field of cognitive neurosciences, which now benefits from a better knowledge of the neural foundations of cerebral processing, and its clinical application, especially in neurosurgery - itself able to provide new insights into brain organization. The anatomical bases are presented, advances and limitations of the different methods of functional cerebral mapping are discussed, updated models of sensorimotor, visuospatial, language, memory, emotional, and executive functions are explained in detail. In the light of these data, new strategies of surgical management of cerebral lesions are proposed, with an optimization of the benefit-risk ratio of surgery. Finally, perspectives about brain connectivity and plasticity are discussed on the basis of translational studies involving serial functional neuroimaging, intraoperative cortico-subcortical electrical mapping, and biomathematical modeling of interactions between parallel distributed neural networks.
