Il morbo che porta il nome di Alois Alzheimer, e che colpisce nel mondo molti milioni di persone, è ormai divenuto familiare, oltre che alla comunità scientifica, al grande pubblico. Ma chi era il medico che lo scoprì e per primo lo descrisse? Quali tracce aveva seguito e quali furono le reazioni che le sue ricerche suscitarono nel mondo scientifico dell'epoca? Il volume nasce dal proposito di correggere l'immagine negativa spesso associata allo Stress, che di per sé non è negativo, anzi è l'essenza della vita. Per questo raccoglie saggi e contributi che spaziano dallo stress cellulare fino allo stress da lavoro, da terremoto, da malattia, nonché qualificate esperienze di gestione dello stress realizzate con il metodo scientifico e studi sul buon stress, detto anche eustress, e sull'eustasi, buon equilibrio. Gli Autori provengono da tradizioni scientifiche e professionali molte diverse tra loro: medici e ricercatori di varia specializzazione, psicologi di vario orientamento, sociologi, filosofi, studiosi della complessità. Eppure il lettore potrà facilmente rintracciare il filo rosso che unisce i numerosi contributi, che è rappresentato dall'intenzione di rivedere la scienza dello stress, unificando le due grandi tradizioni di ricerca: quella neurobiologica - che parte da Hans Selye negli anni '30 del secolo scorso e giunge fino oggi con gli studi di scienziati come Hugo Besedovsky, George Chrousos, Rainer Straub, Claudio Franceschi (tutti in questo volume) - e quella psicologica, che parte da Richard Lazarus e che è qui rappresentata da numerosi qualificati studiosi italiani e stranieri.

10-20 per cent of spinal surgery patients will experience one or more complications from their surgery.
