Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome
Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, Prevention and Management
Botros R. M. B. Rizk
editore: Cambridge
pagine: 248
Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) is a condition that can occur in women undergoing in vitro fertilization, after having follicle stimulation hormone (FSH) injections to stimulate egg growth and maturation. Some patients respond excessively to the drug and dose given. If large numbers of eggs mature, the high hormone levels combined with the increased size of the ovaries, can cause extreme, and sometimes lethal, side effects. The pathophysiology, prevention and management of this syndrome have been revolutionized over the past decade and it is important for reproductive practitioners and infertility specialists to understand the latest findings about this potentially deadly condition. The author reviews in depth the important classification, epidemiology, pathophysiology, complications and prediction, prevention and treatment options for this pathology. This book is intended for infertility specialists, reproductive medicine specialists and assisted reproduction specialists.

editore: Cambridge
pagine: 292
Originally published in 2006, this book provides an in-depth account of trophoblast: the tissue derived from the fertilised egg that nourishes and protects the developing fetus. The cells of the trophoblast have many unique qualities, and exhibit great variability across different species. It has a fascinating role in the development of the placenta and as a regulator during early growth of the embryo. These aspects are all fully covered as well as studies on why it is not rejected by the mother as 'foreign' tissue. Disorders of trophoblast during development also manifest themselves in several clinical conditions during pregnancy, including gestational trophoblastic disease and pre-eclampsia. From stem cells through to epigenetics, implantation and X-chromosome inactivation, there is a lot to be learned about trophoblast, this volume provides a detailed summary of knowledge regarding the subject.

Chronic Pelvic Pain
Tin C. Li
editore: Informa Healthcare
pagine: 252
Chronic pelvic pain [CPP] - defined as pain of anatomic origin that affects behavior and lasts longer than six months - is one of the most common medical problems affecting women today. Clinicians have begun to realize that the incidence is much greater that initially thought. CPP patients present to different medical specialists depending upon primary symptoms. Patients may also present with referred pain or multiple sites of pain origin, therefore it is imperative that clinicians gain an understanding of the interplay between the multiple organ systems that serve as potential sources of pain. CPP is a difficult problem to manage. In many situations the exact underlying cause is uncertain. In others, the pathology thought to be contributory may turn out to be coincidental. It is well recognized that treatment is often of limited success.

Reproductive and Hormonal Aspects of Systemic Autoimmune Diseases
D. Ware Branch , Michael Lockshin
editore: Elsevier Science Ltd
pagine: 196
This volume of the "Handbook of Systemic Autoimmune Diseases" series represents a medical collaboration focusing primarily on female aspects of rheumatic diseases. This collaboration recognizes the need to understand and optimally manage the care of women with autoimmune conditions that may affect their reproduction and hormonal status. This handbook will prove useful to clinicians and researchers alike. It covers practical points, ranging from which anti-rheumatic medications are safe in pregnancy to how to counsel women with scleroderma contemplating pregnancy. Authors share an academic interest in the unique relationship between being a woman and having an autoimmune disease. It touches on controversial topics, such as the mechanism of antiphospholipid-related fetal loss and whether or not non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents should be used in pregnancy. It includes critical and balanced reviews of the controversial association between autoimmune disease and female infertility.
