Cardiovascular Genetics and Genomics for the Cardiologist

Choong-Chin Liew , Victor J. Dzau

editore: Wiley-Blackwell (an imprint of John Wiley & Sons Ltd)

pagine: 328

Until recently, a modest knowledge of genetics was more than adequate for the daily practice of clinical cardiology, but advances in genetics and genomics are changing cardiovascular medicine in fundamental ways. The identification of the genetic basis of several forms of dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, cardiomyopathies, and vascular diseases signalled the new importance of genetics in clinical medicine. In this timely volume, Drs. Dzau and Liew - both pioneers in the area - help cardiologists understand: * how cardiovascular genetics may remodel the way cardiovascular medicine is practiced * what material has immediate relevance to the practicing clinician * how to incorporate genetics and genomics in your practice to ensure up-to-date patient care The book opens with introductory chapters, then discusses: * cardiovascular single gene disorders * cardiovascular polygenic disorders * therapies and applications Outstanding contributors write on their areas of expertise, making Cardiovascular Genetics and Genomics for the Cardiologist both authoritative and comprehensive. If you want to gain a better appreciation of how genetics and genomics are already shaping current practice and may potentially revolutionize cardiology, look no further than this dependable reference.

Essential Hypertension and Its Causes

Neural and Non-neural Mechanisms

Paul I. Korner

editore: Oxford University Press Inc

pagine: 720

Essential hypertension (EH) is the most common type of high blood pressure and is responsible for much death and serious illness, which has been the reason for the huge research effort to determine its causes. However, countless scientific articles still keep proclaiming that "the causes of essential hypertension remain unknown." In view of the number of publications that descend on the hypertension specialist like a waterfall, such proclamations seem to overlook the considerable amount of knowledge that we already have about the etiology of EH. The problem may be a lack of synthesis rather than a lack of information. This book provides a unique synthesis of the pathophysiology of essential hypertension (EH), which is limited through the brain and is critically dependent on both genetic and environmental factors such as stress, high salt intake and obesity. Korner analyses the mechanisms by which the various factors raise blood pressure and the pathophysiology of EH compared with that in renal hypertension and in some of the rat models of genetic hypertension. In some individuals stress-induced vasoconstriction enhances the brain's responsiveness to salt, giving rise to stress-and-salt-related EH. In others, stress-induced EH promotes eating, causing hypertensive obesity. Improving lifestyle through regular exercise and reduction of salt and calorie intake directly antagonises the environmental causes of EH, and has implications for prevenion and treatment.

The Nuts and Bolts of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy

Tom Kenny

editore: Wiley-Blackwell (an imprint of John Wiley & Sons Ltd)

pagine: 224

The Nuts and Bolts of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy By Tom Kenny, RN Vice President, Clinical Education and Training, St. Jude Medical, Austin, TX, USA Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an exciting new option for a growing number of heart failure patients, but CRT systems present special challenges to clinicians, even those accustomed to working with pacemakers. Now, Tom Kenny demystifies the field in this timely, easy-to-understand paperback. Echocardiographic Anatomy in the Fetus

Enrico M. Chiappa , Andrew C. Cook
e altri

editore: Springer Verlag

pagine: 241

Whether in fetal or postnatal life, echocardiographic diagnosis is based on moving images. With recent advances in ultrasound systems, storing multiple digital frames and clips with superb image quality has become a reality. These advances have brought innovative applications into the clinical field and can be integrated into powerful multimedia presentations for teaching purposes. Sections of cardiac specimens are usually compared with corresponding sections in echocardiography textbooks. These sections are mainly obtained from isolated hearts, due to ease and speed of acquisition. Nevertheless, sections of the whole body are a better tool with which to understand the relationship between cardiac and extracardiac structures. This understanding is particularly important in fetal echocardiography, where the number of visible structures around the heart is much greater and the approaches to the fetal thorax are more variable. The DVD accompanying the book presents morphological images from tomographic sections of the whole fetal body, as well as high-quality dynamic echocardiographic images of normal fetuses and of some of the most common congenital heart defects. The extraordinary amount of information provided in this work makes this publication a highly useful resource for obstetricians, sonographers, and pediatric cardiologists.

Genetics of Hypertension

Anna Dominiczak , John Connell

editore: Elsevier Science Ltd

pagine: 283

Classic and modern tools of genetics have been applied to hypertension research for some 20 years. This volume in the "Handbook of Hypertension" series aims to go beyond a simple summary of discoveries and provides a critical commentary on many controversial issues. It will be particularly useful for clinician scientists at all stages of their careers, graduate students and post-doctoral scientists as well as all those interested in cardiovascular medicine and research throughout the entire spectrum from bench to bedside. As in every relatively young area of research, the initial excitement over the early positive observations has not always been confirmed by subsequent larger studies with greater statistical power. Issues related to current recommendations on design of studies and their analysis are therefore included. Pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics have been the subjects of many debates in recent years and are of particular importance in hypertension as life-long treatments, frequently with multiple drugs are given to millions of people world-wide. A critical appraisal of this controversial topic is provided. Several chapters on experimental genetics of hypertension with a special focus on physiological genomics are also included.
