Thyroid and Heart Failure
Giorgio Iervasi , Alessandro Pingitore
editore: Springer Verlag
pagine: 287
Both thyroid dysfunction and heart failure show a high prevalence in the adult population. Frequently, in clinical practice, a multidisciplinary approach is useful to optimize the management of patients with these conditions. Although there is no doubt regarding the close link between cardiovascular pathophysiology and thyroid homeostasis, our understanding of this association is far from being exhaustive. Thyroid hormone regulates the expression of cardiac-specific functional contractile and structural proteins and plays a pivotal role in modulating both diastolic and systolic function as well as peripheral vascular resistance. The close relationship between thyroid and heart dysfunction is strongly supported by recent evidence demonstrating that an altered thyroid profile is a negative prognostic predictor in patients with heart failure. The treatment of chronic heart failure, especially in advanced stages of the disease, continues to be an open and challenging field. The potential of novel thyroid hormone therapies that address the molecular biology of thyroid dysfunction and heart failure thus represents an attractive area of multidisciplinary scientific interest.
This book is a readable, integrated, and highly up to date presentation of the clinical, pathophysiological, and basic science aspects of thyroid - heart failure interactions. It addresses a complex subject in an approach that targets a large audience of readers.

Lipid Disorders
Ian D. Young , Paul Nicholls
editore: Oxford University Press
pagine: 104
Over the past 20 years, effective treatments for lipid disorders have become available. With the high incidence of coronary artery disease in the developed world, interest in this area has greatly increased, and 10% of the UK population now qualify for lipid lowering treatment. It is therefore important that the rational use of lipid-lowering treatment is based on an understanding of the underlying metabolic problem. This comprehensive but concise guide makes basic lipid metabolism understandable to the reader without over-simplification. The often confusing classification of lipid disorders is explained clearly, and this book will appeal to cardiologists, trainees and all related healthcare professionals who are involved in prescribing lipid-lowering medications on a daily basis.
Emergency Echocardiography
Adrian Chenzbraun
editore: Springer London Ltd
pagine: 204
Echocardiography is still relatively underused in the management of critically ill and hemodynamically unstable patients. There is a definite trend for favoring echocardiography over invasive assessment in intensive care units, however, clear guidelines are lacking. The author's experience over the last few years reinforced the importance of a book covering this topic. The basis for the creation this book was the fruit of teaching sessions and ward rounds during which the interest and receptiveness for this topic were obvious.
Hemodynamic Monitoring in the Diagnosis and Management of Heart Failure, An Issue of Heart Failure Clinics
Ragavendra R. Baliga , William T. Abraham
editore: Saunders
pagine: 240
Heart failure incidence increases with age and because the oldest segment of the population in Western countries is the fastest growing, the prevalence of heart failure is expected to increase. Understanding the signs and symptoms of heart failure is therefore of increasing necessity for physicians. Hemodynamic monitoring provides data on blood flow and pressure to assist physicians in determining the status of the patient's heart and in managing heart failure. This issue provides a detailed picture of the various options for assessing hemodynamics, including clinical assessment, echocardiography, transthoracic impedance cardiography, pulmonary artery catheters, B-type natriuretic peptide levels, and implantable devices.
Adult Congenital Heart Disease
Paul Clift , Sara Thorne
editore: Oxford University Press
pagine: 280
To the adult cardiologist, the language of congenital heart disease can be confusing and the spectrum of disease bewildering. Many find the prospect of meeting an adult with complex congenital heart disease in the emergency department disturbing, and rightly so. This book aims to dispel confusion and equip cardiology trainees, general cardiologists and acute medicine physicians with a sound understanding of the principles of the physiology and management of adult congenital heart disease, so that they can treat emergencies and recognise the need for referral to a specialist unit. With easy-to-understand diagrams and key clinical points, this handbook provides both rapid reference for use when the clinical need arises and also an insight into the basic principles of congenital heart disease, giving the reader a good grounding in the care of the adult with congenital heart disease.
Preventive Cardiology
A Practical Manual
Alison Mead

editore: Oxford University Press
pagine: 240
Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death across Europe, accounting for over four million deaths each year. The main objectives of preventive cardiology are to increase the duration and improve the quality of life. This indispensible manual provides practical advice on how to structure and run a preventive cardiology programme, addressing the prevention of cardiovascular disease in clinical practice through lifestyle, risk factor and therapeutic management. The approach described in this manual is for patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, those at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease and their families. It is written by the multidisciplinary team who coordinated the EUROACTION demonstration project in preventive cardiology in 8 countries in Europe, and provides a comprehensive lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factor management strategy . It is directed at doctors, nurses, dieticians, physiotherapists, physical activity specialists and other disciplines involved in the preventive and rehabilitative care of these patients.
The manual takes the professional through the patient and family pathway - from patient identification, recruitment of patient and family, comprehensive assessment of lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors, to management of lifestyle change: stopping smoking, making healthy food choices, becoming physically active, achieving a healthy weight and shape and management of blood pressure, blood lipids and blood glucose to healthy levels. A programme model is described which includes both group and individual one-to-one approaches to care. The role of each member of the multi-disciplinary team is described together with the tools available to achieve lifestyle and risk factor change.
Heart Disease and Diabetes
Miles Fisher
editore: Oxford University Press
pagine: 160
Cardiovascular disease is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in people with diabetes, and the routine management of patients with diabetes now includes close attention to the methods of controlling hyperglycaemia that bring about the maximum reduction in cardiovascular events. Once patients with diabetes develop cardiovascular disease there are specific considerations on the most appropriate cardiological treatment. Staff working in coronary care units and acute stroke units need to be familiar with the investigation and treatment of diabetes. This book details the complications that diabetes presents in relation to heart disease and discusses the possible treatments that can be explored.
