Il libro è rivolto agli Anestesisti e agli Specializzandi della Scuola di Anestesia e Rianimazione, ma ha tutte le caratteristiche per essere un ottimo strumento di approfondimento e consultazione per tutti coloro che si occupano di Emergenze.

L’anestesiologia si è evoluta in un luogo della medicina che va ben oltre la tradizionale prestazione delle cure intraoperatorie o dell’esercizio della professione in modo isolato o in piccoli gruppi, con i relativi processi di fatturazione. La portata della pratica specialistica ora abbraccia l’intero spettro perioperatorio, andando dalla valutazione e dal trattamento preoperatorio alla terapia intensiva post-chirurgica e al trattamento del dolore acuto postoperatorio. Anche la medicina del dolore, da rimedi empirici, è passata a pratiche multidisciplinari allargate e alla cura in hospice. Persino gli aspetti commerciali dell’anestesiologia, dalla fatturazione per dichiarare le responsabilità di contratti esclusivi, sono diventati sempre più complessi. Così gli studenti di medicina, gli specializzandi, i ricercatori o borsisti e altri studenti di anestesiologia, più una crescente proporzione di noi anestesisti più anziani che vediamo la nostra pratica espandersi o che siamo coinvolti nel mantenimento della certificazione, abbiamo bisogno di informazioni concise, accurate e utili che coprano l’ampio range di argomenti e scenari che incontriamo nell’esercizio della nostra professione. Questo dà consigli pratici su molti dei più importanti e spesso imbarazzanti problemi che incontriamo nella pratica quotidiana. Non conosco nessun altro testo di anestesia che sia così utile e, ad essere onesti, divertente da leggere. Impartisce consigli di buon senso per molti dei più importanti problemi clinici della nostra specialità in piccoli “bocconi” facilmente digeribili. Around the time of writing the first edition - about a decade ago - there were very few monographs on this s- ject: today, there are possibly no less than 20. Based on critical inputs, this edition stands thoroughly revamped. New chapters on ventilator waveforms, airway humidification, and aerosol therapy in the ICU now find a place. Novel software-based modes of ventilation have been included. Ventilator-associated pneumonia has been se- rated into a new chapter. Many new diagrams and algorithms have been added. Many of the sections are loaded with very clear pictures, comparative tables, diagrams and lists, and provide more than adequate information for juniors training in intensive care medicine. The definitions, aetiology, clinical features and differential diagnoses are well covered. Excellent use is made of bullet points and numbering, which vastly increases the clarity of presentation compared with many other books that are pitched at a similar audience.
