Come evitare errori in anestesia
editore: Verduci
pagine: 900
editore: Edizioni Medico-Scientifiche
pagine: 256
Understanding Mechanical Ventilation
Ashfaq Hasan
editore: Springer London Ltd
pagine: 564
Simplify, simplify! Henry David Thoreau For writers of technical books, there can be no better piece of advice. Around the time of writing the first edition - about a decade ago - there were very few monographs on this s- ject: today, there are possibly no less than 20. Based on critical inputs, this edition stands thoroughly revamped. New chapters on ventilator waveforms, airway humidification, and aerosol therapy in the ICU now find a place. Novel software-based modes of ventilation have been included. Ventilator-associated pneumonia has been se- rated into a new chapter. Many new diagrams and algorithms have been added. As in the previous edition, considerable energy has been spent in presenting the material in a reader-friendly, conv- sational style. And as before, the book remains firmly rooted in physiology. My thanks are due to Madhu Reddy, Director of Universities Press - formerly a professional associate and now a friend, P. Sudhir, my tireless Pulmonary Function Lab technician who found the time to type the bits and pieces of this manuscript in between patients, A. Sobha for superbly organizing my time, Grant Weston and Cate Rogers at Springer, London, Balasaraswathi Jayakumar at Spi, India for her tremendous support, and to Dr. C. Eshwar Prasad, who, for his words of advice, I should have thanked years ago. vii viii Preface to the Second Edition Above all, I thank my wife and daughters, for understanding.
ABC of Sepsis
Ron Daniels , Tim Nutbeam
editore: Wiley-Blackwell (an imprint of John Wiley & Sons Ltd)
pagine: 104
The importance of early prevention and treatment of sepsis has never been greater. In the UK alone sepsis contributes to more deaths than lung cancer, from bowel cancer and breast cancer combined, and approximately one third of patients who suffer from severe sepsis die. The ABC of Sepsis provides a much needed introduction and an invaluable aid in the increasing efforts to reduce hospital infection and improve patient safety. As growing numbers of junior medical staff experience emergency medicine, critical care and acute medicine as part of the Foundation Programme, there is an increasing need to develop the skills required to treat severe sepsis. The editors are involved with the Survive Sepsis campaign - developed to improve the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of sepsis - and are perfectly placed to guide junior medics, GPs, specialist nurses, critical care nurses and primary care staff through this core aspect of acute medicine.
Ultrasound Guided Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine
Techniques and Tips
Paul E. Bigeleisen
editore: Springhouse Publishing Co ,U.S.

This full-color text/atlas describes all of the nerve blocks for which ultrasound guidance has proved efficacious, including upper and lower limb blocks. The chapter organization is similar to Chelly's "Peripheral Nerve Blocks" book: each block is described by concise text covering the indications for use, necessary equipment, anatomic landmarks, approach, and technique. The blocks are richly illustrated by ultrasound stills and relevant anatomy. A companion Website will have video modules on principles of sonography, including how to turn on the machine, set up the transducers, move the transducers, change the contrast, depth, frequency and dynamic range compression settings, how to use color Doppler flow imaging and align the needle with the beam, and ultrasound-guided blocks of the interscalene, supraclavicular, infraclavicular, axillary, femoral, subgluteal, popliteal, and caudal regions.

editore: Springer Verlag
pagine: 596
The focus of this volume is the "state of the art" of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine as well as new insights into basic science, clinical research and therapeutic interventions. Structured in four parts, the volume opens with few chapters devoted to the beginning and development of the WSICCM, to procedures standardization, recommendations and quality of care improvement, with particular reference to the definition of clinical governance, professionalism and ethics. In the second part, the authors describe the practical clinical approach to critical illness; among the topics dealt with, the reader will find monitoring and management of shock states; acute pain management, airway management, ALI/ARDS and protective lung ventilation; the problem of weaning; antibiotics policy, sepsis and organ dysfunction. The third part of the book is related to some special conditions of countries with limited resources, such as management of obstetrics at high risk, malaria, AIDS, blood transfusion and its components.
The last part of the book is structured to present some crucial issues of the intensive and critical care arena, in particular evidence-based practice, the role of the e-distance learning for information and the promotion of CME programs; last but not least, trauma care, disaster and natural disaster medicine are also discussed; a final chapter on the Guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO) on Disaster Medicine is included.
Neurocritical Care
A Practical Guide
Michel T. Torbey
editore: Cambridge
pagine: 440
Very few hospitals have dedicated neurointensive care units for management of critically ill neurological and neurosurgical patients. Frequently, these patients are managed in the medical or surgical ICU by non-neurologists, who have a hard time appreciating the delicate needs of these patients. This book is a straightforward, practical reference for treating physicians who need to deal with a wide range of complex conditions and associated medical problems. Although comprehensive in scope, Dr Michel T. Torbey has designed this book for neurologists and physicians in the ICU who need a concise and thorough guide to management and treatment. It emphasizes practical state-of-the-art suggestions for management and treatment and provides accessible, easy-to-follow, highly structured, and focused protocols for the assessment, day-to-day management, and treatment of critically ill patients in various ICU divisions.

Oxford Handbook of Critical Care Nursing
Sheila K. Adam , Sue Osborne
editore: Oxford University Press
pagine: 592
The Oxford Handbook of Critical Care Nursing has been written as a handy reference guide for nurses who are new to the critical care area, as well as a reminder for those with more experience. Each section provides an overview of individual problems, and the related physiology and level of knowledge required to deal with them. The book sets the context for nursing within a continuum of critical care starting from early recognition of acute deterioration and the need for critical care outreach, through to patient outcomes and their follow-up, and evaluation of care post-discharge. Nursing specific skills are highlighted with a holistic approach to patients and their families. Reflecting best practice, this book provides the essence of what is important to the delivery of highly skilled and caring critical care nursing, in an easy to access and readable format. Providing the nurse at the bedside with the answers to many day-to-day problems experienced when caring for critically ill patients, this is also a guide to some of the less commonly encountered issues, such as planning for major incidents and epidemics.

Handbook of Critical Care
Jesse B. Hall
editore: Springer London Ltd
pagine: 275
Previously published as Handbook of Critical Care by CMG this book is a pocket-sized basic intensive care manual. The handbook is divided into 15 chapters, eight substantial ones covering the major organ systems, as well as infection, nutrition, physical injury and toxicology, and brief chapters on scoring systems and obstetrics. Many of the sections are loaded with very clear pictures, comparative tables, diagrams and lists, and provide more than adequate information for juniors training in intensive care medicine. The definitions, aetiology, clinical features and differential diagnoses are well covered. Excellent use is made of bullet points and numbering, which vastly increases the clarity of presentation compared with many other books that are pitched at a similar audience.
