Enabling Technologies in Rehabilitation

Body Image and Body Function

Malcolm MacLachlan, Pamela Gallagher

editore: Churchill Livingstone

pagine: 290

Biotechnology, and the benefits it can offer are playing an increasingly important role in all areas of clinical rehabilitation. However, it is still often regarded with suspicion and mistrust by many clinicians and their patients. "Enabling Technologies: Body Image and Body Function" is intended to help all those who encounter biological innovations within their clinical practice to attain a better understanding of their potential, and the benefits they can offer for their patients. Compiled and edited by two of the leading researchers in the field of rehabilitation technology, the book brings together 29 contributions from experts in major centres in 10 different countries. "Enabling Technologies: Body Image and Body Function" presents the full range of technological developments, which may be used in the field of clinical rehabilitation, and explains and demystifies their practical relevance for the non-specialist clinician. In doing so, it makes an important contribution to this fast developing field. It will provide an invaluable source of reference to all those working in the field of rehabilitation who encounter biotechnological innovations as part of their professional practice. Clinicians who understand the potential of the innovations biotechnology can offer, and are able to deal with the emotional responses of the patients will be well placed to achieve faster and more effective rehabilitation for those in their care. This book can help them to do this.

Treatment Planning in General Dental Practice

Crawford Bain

editore: Churchill Livingstone

pagine: 168

This is an introduction to treatment planning in general dental practice. It is to be published in association with "Dental Update". On leaving dental school, most dentists are competent in a number of treatment modalities such as placing fillings, crowns and simple bridges, periodontal care, extraction etc. However, integrating all these aspects of care when they are faced by real patients with multiple problems is more difficult. In recent years, treatment options have become more sophisticated, patient expectations have risen and litigation for malpractice has become more common. All these factors have made it more important for the dentist to be able to produce a rational treatment plan and to communicate the various options to the patient effectively. This book will address the difficulties young dentists face in providing their patients with integrated treatment.

Healing, Intention and Energy Medicine

Science, Research Methods and Clinical Implications

Cindy Crawford, Wayne B. Jonas

editore: Churchill Livingstone

pagine: 424

This book provides a clear and authoritative summary of the results and clinical implications of research in spiritual healing, energy medicine and the effects of intentionality. Recent publications in the "Archives of Internal Medicine", the "Western Journal of Medicine", "JAMA", and the "Annals of Internal Medicine" have focused on prayer, distant healing and spiritual healing. Therapeutic touch is taught in many nursing schools, and laying-on-of-hands and mental healing are of great interest to the public. But, what is the science behind these practices? Is there any research? Is it any good? What are the implications of this research for medicine and science? How should investigation of spiritual healing proceed, if at all? These are the questions this book explores. This book derives from a project sponsored by the Lawrence S. Rockefeller for the purpose of rigorously evaluating the science of spiritual healing. To produce the book, some of the best researchers in these areas were asked to use a standard set of quality criteria for the evaluation of science and clinical research. A conference of scientists, physicians, ministers and others then reviewed and discussed this literature and addressed methods for their further evaluation. The conference was organised by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Duke University, Wake Forest University and the Institute of Noetic Sciences. The evidence level of these areas was rated using standards established by government groups, and published in "JAMA" for classification of the amount and quality of evidence in medicine. Each area was summarised, and clinical implications identified. Recommendations for future research and investigating the impact of healing practices in the clinical setting were also made.
