L'aumento della prevalenza del diabete mellito è ormai esponenziale e il suo impatto sulle malattie cardiovascolari risulta sempre più evidente. Il paziente affetto da diabete presenta infatti un rischio notevolmente aumentato di sviluppare eventi cardiovascolari maggiori. Ciò è dovuto alla particolare aggressività della malattia aterosclerotica a livello dei vasi, favorita dalla disfunzione endoteliale legata allo stato iperglicemico. Inoltre, tali alterazioni patologiche risultano proporzionali ai livelli di glicemia e si manifestano quindi anche nel paziente non ancora diabetico, secondo un "continuum" tra glicemia ed eventi cardiovascolari.
