Evidence-based Psychopharmacology
Bernard Lerer
,
Dan J. Stein
e altri
editore: Cambridge
pagine: 380
This book presents a comprehensive overview of recent advances in evidence-based pharmacological treatment of psychiatric disorders. There have been very significant developments in our understanding of the methods for systematically reviewing literature, assessing clinical trials and optimising decision making. The book explores these issues and applies the lessons learned to the practical management of major psychiatric conditions, addressing issues such as selecting the best first-line psychopharmacological intervention for a particular disorder, how long a particular intervention should be continued, and identifying the next-best treatment strategy should the first agent fail. Conditions covered include, amongst others, depression, schizophrenia, panic, PTSD, OCD, ADHD and eating disorders. The potential for complications as a result of adverse interactions between drugs is also examined. These issues lie at the heart of clinical psychopharmacology and the book will therefore appeal to all practising clinicians, whether in a primary care or a specialist mental health setting.
OSCE and Clinical Skills Handbook
Katrina F. Hurley
editore: Saunders (W.B.) Co Ltd
pagine: 448
During their education, medical students must learn and develop the fundamental history-taking and physical examination skills to prepare them for their medical careers. In an effort to standardize the clinical evaluations of these skills, North American medical schools use Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). Medical students and residents perform clinical tasks with a simulated patient and the student is evaluated on the questions that are asked of the 'patient' and how the physical examination is conducted. These are generally evaluated in a checklist manner, with appropriate actions receiving a checkmark. Most medical schools use this form of evaluation as early as the first year of medicine. "The OSCE and Clinical Skills Handbook" was designed as a study aid for medical students preparing for these examinations. It summarizes important history and physical examination skills but also presents the information in a Q & A format, designed to facilitate both individual and group study. It is a practical review for medical students of all levels.
The various disorders are described in such a way as to guide the less experienced while also including a more sophisticated multi-system perspective. "The OSCE and Clinical Skills Handbook" will be a valuable comprehensive reference to which any level of student can return often.

Basic Medical Sciences for MRCP Part 1
Philippa J. Easterbrook
editore: Churchill Livingstone
pagine: 448
This is a revision book intended primarily for candidates sitting their MRCP Part 1 examination and which covers all the essential basic sciences. It focuses on the recurring themes which come up in the questions. The book also includes a chapter on clinical pharmacology (which alone accounts for up to 30 percent of the questions), looking at aspects of drug-induced disease and drug interactions. Finally there is a chapter on statistics and epidemiology which is rarely covered in other texts, but is often included in the exam. Despite the changes to the teaching of the undergraduate in medicine and the integration of the basic sciences with clinical education, the junior doctor, faced with postgraduate examinations, is always going to be poorly prepared for those increasingly important subjects. This book presents the essential information in the form of lists, tables, diagrams and flow charts.

Minor Ailments in Primary Care
An Evidence-Based Approach
Aire Knuistingh Neven
,
Just A. H. Eekhof
e altri
editore: Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd
pagine: 516
Although minor ailments form a large part of the work of a General Practitioner, relatively little is known about them. Important and life threatening diseases and syndromes get a lot of attention during medical education, whereas minor ailments, which form a much larger part of the GPs daily routine, hardly get any. However, the symptoms of these disorders often cause real problems and can be a burden to the patient. The authors of this book have described the most frequently encountered complaints and disorders that do not pose a serious health threat, often have a good prognosis and have not been paid much attention during medical education or in scientific papers. The basic principle of this book is to provide relevant and reliable information on minor ailments, as far as possible based on scientific evidence. The 119 chapters have uniform format and are written in a crisp and concise way that make them easily accessible in daily practice.

Decisione ed errore in medicina
Giacomo Delvecchio
editore: Centro Scientifico Editore
pagine: 260

The Patient History
Evidence-based Approach
Lawrence M. Tierney
,
Mark Henderson
e altri
editore: McGraw-Hill Medical
pagine: 450
"The Complete Patient History" carefully teaches students the steps in history taking, the most important part of the clinical examination. It fills a large void in the market. At present, there are many books available on performing the physical examination, but very few focus on the patient interview. Of these, none are organised by specific complaints, much less how patients are encountered in a clinical or office setting.
