Dupuytren's Disease
A Concept of Surgical Treatment
G. M. Rayan , P. Brenner
editore: Springer Verlag GmbH
pagine: 254
Morbus Dupuytren is particularly widespread among northern Europeans. However, the therapeutic success-rate often leaves much to be desired. A 50 per cent recurrence-rate after surgery indicates that the disease cannot be treated by surgery alone. This book therefore adopts two parallel approaches: emphasis is firstly placed on the systemic character of morbus Dupuytren in context with other connective tissue diseases by a description of the biochemical and molecular-biological changes in the diseased connective tissues; secondly, a diversified picture of the given anatomical facts serves to explain the employment of the various therapeutic approaches. Further, a description is given of the current surgical procedures.
Exercise Testing
New Concepts for the New Century
Ezra A. Amsterdam , Myrvin H. Ellestad
editore: Kluwer Academic Publishers
pagine: 183
Since it was introduced less than 100 years ago, analysis of the circulatory response to exercise as a measure of cardiac function has undergone remarkable development. Most recently this approach has incorporated the burgeoning technology of the last half of the 20th century to meet the physiological and diagnostic needs of scientist and clinicians. The ease of administration, economy and abundant data that characterize exercise testing for its relative staying power as the most frequently utilized noninvasive method of cardiovascular evaluation. The basic modalities of exercise electrocardiography of treadmill and bicycle have been extended by noninvasive cardiac imaging techniques, including scintigraphy and echocardiography, that have provided new insights in myocardial function during exertion and pharmacologic stress. At the same time, traditional exercise electrocardiography has also been refined by innovations that have broadened its applications. Exercise Testing: Current Concepts and Recent Advances affords the reader a state-of-the-art presentation of the diverse and expanding methods of exercise testing and their roles in patient management.
The contributors to this volume include individuals who have made seminal contributions to the field during the last several decades. Indeed, it is legitimate to designate this group as a 'Who's Who of Exercise Testing'. It is our hope that this book will enhance the reader's understanding of contemporary methods of exercise testing, as well as provide a glimpse into future directions of this science, that this knowledge is applied to optimal diagnosis and management of our patients.
Smell and Taste Complaints
Christopher Hawkes
editore: Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd
pagine: 176
This practical, brief guide to diagnosing and treating causes of disorders of smell and taste is the only accessible handbook available for non-experts. Signs of problems with these two senses may be ignored by the patient or downplayed by the physician, but the disruption of the senses may be a first sign of serious illness. The wide range of conditions responsible for disorders of smell and taste make it difficult to determine the single underlying cause and to decide upon the best possible plan of treatment. "Disorders of Smell and Taste" will help physicians manage some of these patients thereby minimizing references to specialists.

Magnetic Resonance in Dementia
Frederik Barkhof
,
Jaap Valk
e altri
editore: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K
pagine: 363
This is the first work to take a comprehensive look at the application of magnetic resonance (MR) techniques in the diagnosis, follow-up and therapy monitoring of dementing illnesses. Over the years, MR has proven to be an extremely valuable method of identifying treatable disorders of dementia at an early stage, which is of great importance when keeping in mind that about 1-6 per cent of the population over the age of 65 suffers from dementing illnesses. The authors present an overview of MR findings in neurodegenerative and vascular disorders leading to dementia. In doing so, they also discuss other diseases that lead to cognitive and/or behavioural deterioration such as infectious-inflammatory disorders, toxic encephalopathies, inborn errors of metabolism of adult onset and post-traumatic, post-radiotherapy and post-chemotherapy conditions. This authoritative, well-written and richly illustrated reference work is indispensable for anybody working in the field.

Forefoot Reconstruction
Louis S. Barouk
editore: Springer Editions
pagine: 384
The forefoot surgery has been for a long time not well known or presenting many inconvenients: postoperative period painful, recurrence of the deformities. The emerging of new techniques, notably the scarf firts metatarsal osteotomy, The Weil osteotomy of the lesser metatarsal, provides a dramatic improvement of the treatment of the static forefoot disorders, the great toe osteotomy has also been greatly improved. The author has introduced these techniques from USA in France since 1991, while developing and studying the corresponding implants and the postoperative period. In the other hand, he has developed the surgical management which makes the links between these different osteotomies. About 1000 surgeons in France and around the world are using these techniques, which are always tought.
Cardiac Cellular Electrophysiology
Southwest Germany in the Late Paleolithic and Mesolithic
Edward Carmeliet , Johan Vereecke
editore: Kluwer Academic Publishers
pagine: 433
Cardiac Cellular Electrophysiology is intended for the clinical cardiologist who wishes to refresh or deepen his understanding of the cellular basis of cardiac electrophysiology, for researchers interested in the basis of the electrical activity of the heart, such as clinical investigators, physiologists or pharmacologists, for teachers in physiology, pharmacology and other biomedical studies, and for medical students from graduate to postgraduate level. Cardiac Cellular Electrophysiology starts with a primer of basic electrophysiology, the cardiac action potential and the physiological basis of the electrocardiogram. Our second aim after having introduced the basic concepts was to continue with giving an overview of the properties of the most important ionic currents in the heart, and to treat their modulation, in order to deal with the mechanisms underlying cardiac ischaemia, arrhythmias and remodelling. Edward Carmeliet and Johan Vereecke, Katholieke University Leuven, Belgium, have collaborated for over 30 years in cardiac electrophysiology research.
Their studies include the genesis of the normal action potential, its changes in ischaemia, the effect of drugs, and the mechanism of arrhythmias, using techniques from the classic potential registration with intracellular microelectrodes to whole cell clamp and single channel measurements.

Systematic comparison is made with other vascular imaging techniques.
Syringomyelia
Diagnosis and Treatment
Joerg Klekamp , M. Samii
editore: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K
pagine: 208
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has revolutionized our understanding of many neurological diseases. This is the first textbook on syringomyelia by a single team of authors covering all aspects of this disease since the introduction of this method. Based on a pathophysiological concept which is presented in the opening chapters of this book, we provide guidelines for diagnosis and surgical treatment of patients with syringomyelia. Each pathological condition syringomyelia may be associated with is described in a separate chapter in which clinical presentations, neuroradiological features, neurophysiology, and surgical indications and techniques are covered. Finally, a detailed analysis of postoperative results is given. Special sections are devoted to patients after treatment has failed. This book should help any physician dealing with a patient to initiate the appropriate diagnostic tests and studies to reach a diagnosis as to what has caused the syrinx.
