Clinical Challenges in Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery
Leslie H. Blumgart , Lucilla Poston
editore: Taylor & Francis Ltd
pagine: 512
Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery is now firmly established within the repertoire of modern general surgery. Indeed, in many major tertiary centres there are now specific teams for both pancreatic and liver surgery. However, in most hospitals outside these major centres the day-to-day management and decision-making for patients with these disorders remains the remit of the general surgeon and presents often highly complex clinical scenarios. Surgical Management of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Disorders is a detailed guide to management in problems arising from cancer, trauma, cysts and other conditions, both acute and chronic. It is intended to cover the spectrum of common HPB diseases that will confront the general surgeon in his or her regular practice. The chapters are problem-based, rather than didactic descriptions of pathology and surgical technique. It is sufficiently comprehensive to cover the broad spectrum of HPB surgery for candidates coming to examinations at the completion of surgical training and will act as a comprehensive reference tool for surgeons in practice and in training.

Volunteers in Hospice and Palliative Care
A Handbook for Volunteer Service Managers
Cicely Saunders
editore: Oxford University Press
pagine: 240
This book provides comprehensive, practical guidelines on the responsibilities of those who lead, co-ordinate and manage volunteers in small hospices, large specialist palliative care units, and in general hospitals with palliative care teams. Volunteers are key workers, who often perform difficult and always important work. In the United Kingdom alone, there are thousands of volunteers in hospice work, a small proportion doing work with patients, and the vast majority doing equally valuable work such as driving, sitting with relatives, manning charity shops and telephones. As a result, Europe, Australia, the United States and Canada are very interested in the United Kingdom's use of volunteers. Aimed primarily at Volunteer Service Managers in small hospices, large specialist palliative care units, and in general hospitals with palliative care teams, this book covers volunteer selection, training, supervision and support, and legal and ethical considerations. Information is presented in an easily accessible way, using key points, summary panels and checklists.
Contributors, who are all Volunteer Service Managers themselves, have included small, clinical vignettes to bring the text to life. This book will also appeal to the volunteers themselves.
Human Molecular Biology
An Introduction to the Molecular Basis of Health and Disease
Richard J. Epstein
editore: Cambridge
pagine: 656
Human Molecular Biology is an introduction to the molecular basis of health and disease for the new generation of life scientists and medical students. By integrating cutting-edge molecular genetics and biochemistry with the latest clinical information, the book weaves a pattern which unifies biology with syndromes, genetic pathways with developmental phenotypes, and protein function with drug action. From the origins of life to the present day, a narrative is traced through the workings of genomes, cells and organ systems, culminating in linking of laboratory technologies to future research horizons. Lavishly illustrated throughout with two-colour diagrams and full colour clinical pictures, this text brings the complexities and breadth of human molecular biology clearly to life. This seamless account breaks through the boundaries between molecular biology and medicine, and leads the reader on to a new dimension where the biological basis of health and disease is inescapably molecular.
Human Molecular Biology scooped both the Richard Asher prize for best new textbook and the overall 'Medical Book of the Year' in the Society of Authors and Royal Society of Medicine Medical Book Awards 2003.
The Parahippocampal Region
Organization and Role in Cognitive Function
Floris Wouterlood , Menno P. Witter
editore: Oxford University Press
pagine: 366
The recent dramatic advances in imaging technologies have enabled researchers to build on the evidence obtained from lesion and behavioural studies to propose a new range of functions for the parahippocampal region. It is now possible to image the region in healthy human subjects and to define the pathological changes occurring during the early phases of a range of neurologic and psychiatric conditions. The results have uncovered evidence suggesting that the region plays an important role in the higher cognitive processes of learning and memory, and in specific brain diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia and epilepsy, as well as in the aging process itself. The Parahippocampal Region: Organization and Role in Cognitive Functions examines the architecture and activity of this section of the temporal lobe, describes the systems active in memory, perception and behaviour, and outlines the significance of its involvement in the progress of a range of disease states. It provides an overview of our current basic and clinical knowledge and a baseline for further expansion of the functional understanding of the region.
With contributions from an international team of authors this book will be of interest to neuroscientists, researchers and practitioners from the fields of neuropsychology, neurology and psychiatry, as well as to students from these disciplines.

Superantigen Protocols
Teresa Krakauer
editore: Humana Press Inc.
pagine: 271
Superantigen Protocols assembles experimental protocols that have proved useful for the study of superantigens. These techniques will allow researchers from various areas of cell biology, microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, and molecular biology to assess the physical characteristics and biological effects of well-known superantigens as well as of putative substances that might have superantigenic activities, and to explore therapies for superantig- induced effects. Microbial exotoxins have been studied for decades as virulence factors because of their pathogenic effects. The term "superantigen" was coined by Marrack and Kappler a decade ago for some of these molecules because of their potent T-cell stimulatory activities. In recent years, advances in mole- lar biology provide recombinant as well as natural superantigens in highly purified form for physical characterization. Superantigens are now used extensively as tools to study interactions between receptors on cells of the immune system as they bind to major histocompatibility complex class II m- ecules on antigen-presenting cells and V regions of T-cell receptors. The b- ? logical effects that result from these interactions are studied both in vitro and in vivo.
The intent of this book is, therefore, to bring together up-to-date te- niques developed by experts in the field of biochemistry, immunology, and molecular biology for the study of superantigens. Superantigen Protocols begins with an overview of the field to provide background information on the various classes of superantigens and their str- ture.
Laparoscopy in Children
