Il volume Cardiopatie Congenite scritto e dato alle stampe da Carla Frescura e Gaetano Thiene completa un impegno nello studio e nell’insegnamento delle malformazioni di cuore.Il libro, grazie ad una ricca iconografia anatomica, corredata da schemi e tabelle, cerca di rendere facile la comprensione delle cardiopatie congenite trattandone l’anatomia e la classificazione e illustrando le singole patologie, talora particolarmente complesse.Le immagini anatomiche del libro sono state realizzate grazie alla Collezione Anatomica di Cardiopatie Congenite della Unità Operativa Complessa Patologia Cardiovascolare dell’Azienda Ospedale-Università Padova, che data dall’inizio degli anni ’70. Gli esemplari anatomici cardiaci sono stati raccolti, conservati e corredati da archiviazione elettronica anonima di dati e immagini. Oggi con orgoglio possiamo affermare che questa Collezione Anatomica non ha rivali in Europa e nel mondo.Grazie a questa Collezione sono stati organizzati Corsi annuali e istituiti Master specialistici diretti a Pediatri, Cardiologi e Cardiochirurghi pediatrici e dell’adulto, che hanno reso Padova un centro di eccellenza nel campo della Cardiologia e della Cardiochirurgia delle malformazioni congenite di cuore.In collaborazione con i colleghi clinici, secondo il metodo morgagnano di correlazione anatomo-clinica, è stato possibile perfezionare la diagnostica clinica con “imaging” non invasivo (ecocardiografia e risonanza magnetica), studiare nuove tecniche di correzione chirurgica e valutarne il risultato postoperatorio mediante studio diretto su esemplari anatomici di pazienti con cardiopatia congenita, mancati in storia naturale o dopo intervento chirurgico.È significativo ricordare che il padre dell’anatomia patologica moderna, Giovanni Battista Morgagni, nel 1761 nel suo libro De Sedibus et Causis Morborum per Anatomen Indagatis, Lettera anatomico medica 17.12 all’Amico, descrisse un caso autoptico di cardiopatia congenita in una giovane deceduta all’età di 16 anni. La ragazza presentava un colorito cianotico ed era affetta da una serrata stenosi valvolare polmonare con comunicazione interatriale del tipo forame ovale pervio. Morgagni seppe interpretare la cianosi come conseguenza dello shunt destro sinistro a livello atriale, dovuto alle elevate pressioni delle cavità destre del cuore.Oggi le malformazioni cardiache complesse sono diagnosticabili e correggibili chirurgicamente o con tecniche di cardiologia interventistica anche in Italia e non vi sono più i “viaggi della speranza” verso centri esteri.
