Aging, Immunity, and Infection

Joseph F. Albright, Julia W. Albright

editore: Humana Press Inc.

pagine: 242

The preparation of Aging, Immunity, and Infection has been a "labor of labor. " When we began, there existed a huge literature-but manage- able, we thought, given our years of experience in the area often referred to as immunogerontology. However, in the time that we have been at work, the new relevant literature has increased at a prodigious rate. The more we read and tried to assimilate, the farther we fell behind. In order to have any hope of completing a book on this rapidly evolving topic, we have been forced to become increasingly selective in covering new and re cent publications. We dare to hope that many read- ers will find the book useful and only a few will dweIl on the inevitable inadequacies. We consider the book a work in progress, and welcome suggestions for future editions. Five chapters cover several aspects of infection and the decline of immunity with age. The first chapter "Human Aging: Present and Future," is devoted to demographics and theories of senescence. Chap- ter 2 outlines the gradual breakdown of resistance to infection in the aged individual. Chapters 3 and 4 cover changes in innate and acquired immunity. The final chapter, "Nutrition, Longevity, and Integrity of the Immune System," discusses such provocative ideas as life-span exten- sion and nutritional intervention for the delay of immunosenescence.

Infectious Disease Secrets

Robert H. Gates

editore: Hanley & Belfus Inc.

pagine: 471

The daily headlines continue to reflect and emphasize the necessity for expertise in the field of infection. 'E. coli contaminated meat', 'West Nile Virus spreads', 'White Powder discovered', 'Bacteria specific viral lysins may hold key to new class of antibiotics', 'Hope for new AIDS vaccine trial' are just a few examples. New chapters are devoted to the rapidly emerging technologies that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of infection, the horrifying but real threat of biowarfare, and the role of the entire medical team, not just the ID doc. in combating infections. Content has been revised and updated to reflect current knowledge and understanding of infectious disease processes. The emphasis on the sound foundation of how to explore and discover new information is retained.

Nuclear Medicine in the Management of Inflammatory and Infectious Diseases

Alberto Signore, F. Scopinaro
e altri

editore: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K

pagine: 205

As chairman of the European Association of Nuclear Medi- cine (EANM) 2001 annual meeting, I tried to reach two goals: a "universal nuclear medicine" congress where all people could speak and learn using the same language, and a full exploration of the possibility of making a diagnosis through global imaging. I am personally convinced that nuclear med- icine techniques in the detection of infection and inflamma- tion are essential, and in the near future their role and clinical impact will be impressive. As stated during the meeting, this topic will be one of the major and expanding fields of interest for nuclear medicine. During the post-congress meetings organized in Capri by Alberto Signore and Mauro Liberatore for each topic, there was a leading expert for the clinical, radiological and nuclear medicine aspects. This interaction was crucial for the quality of the discussion and the definition of flow charts that will be useful for all the medical community. These meetings, where for each topic there is full coverage of all the aspects of imaging, are, in my opinion, the most fruitful and useful for the progression and diffusion of nu- clear medicine procedures. May 2002 Prof. Marco Salvatore Chairman of the EANM Congress 2001 Some 35 years ago, a French singer sold millions of records with a song, trying to tell the world "Capri c'est fini" - Capri is over.
