"Quando dalla McGraw-Hill mi è giunta la proposta di scrivere questo manuale ho accettato con entusiasmo, forse un po' ingenuamente. Probabilmente, all'epoca, non mi ero reso conto del tutto che scrivere un testo di chirurgia per infermieri fosse un'impresa tanto complessa. Tale complessità non deriva solo dalla vastità della materia, peraltro in continua evoluzione, ma anche, e forse soprattutto, dalla necessità di coniugare con equilibrio la conoscenza, ovvero il sapere, con la capacità di tradurre in atti concreti tale conoscenza, ovvero il saper fare, equilibrio che è una delle caratteristiche peculiari della professione infermieristica. Il rischio è quello di collocarsi troppo a ridosso di uno dei due estremi: da una parte, l'eccesso di informazioni e di nozioni che diviene vanità fine a se stessa; dall'altra, in nome della didattica e della facilità di apprendimento, un'eccessiva sintesi ai limiti dell'ignoranza. Per queste ragioni, si è voluto dare al testo una struttura ben riconoscibile e adeguata alla disciplina. I primi sedici capitoli del volume trattano argomenti di carattere generale, alcuni francamente inusuali per un testo di chirurgia (per esempio, i temi dell'etica, della comunicazione, della responsabilità professionale e medico legale). I capitoli della seconda parte, dal 17 al 40, affrontano invece la parte di chirurgia specialistica classicamente disposta per organi ed apparati." (dalla prefazione).

L'interesse comune per i temi legati all'assistenza ha portato le Autrici a intraprendere un itinerario attraverso la storia della professione infermieristica, antica quanto l'uomo e non scindibile da esso. L'indagine e la ricognizione squisitamente storica hanno prodotto rivelazioni inattese, delineando un percorso travagliato, che porta a tutt'oggi a non avere uno status definito per gli infermieri, sia in ambito professionale sia in ambito universitario.
