pagine: 400
This book provides a case-based illustrative approach to the understanding and management of common and important sleep disorders, including snoring and sleep disordered breathing, insomnia and circadian-rhythm disorders, as well as primary neurological sleep disorders. Case histories are written by well-established experts from University College London Hospitals who have long-standing experience of providing a multi-disciplinary approach to the management of sleep disorders. Cases focus on the recognition of presenting features of sleep disorders and their clinical importance, using real life patients from sleep clinic. Each case report provides a detailed clinical description followed by a clear explanation of the salient points. The text is supported by photographs, diagrams and line drawing and concludes with a list of key learning points. Each case history reads as stand-alone, although a common theme of presenting features, clinical features, investigation and treatment is adhered to. Cases are written in an easy-flowing prose style in an attempt to simulate the experience of seeing and discussing a real life patient case in clinical practice.
The book is of interest to all clinicians who are likely to come across patients with sleep disorders in their clinical practice and wish to improve their understanding and knowledge of sleep disorders.

Sleepiness and Human Impact Assessment
Sergio Garbarino
editore: Springer Verlag
pagine: 329
The World Health Organization supports tools and initiatives in Health Impact Assessment to dynamically improve health and well-being across different sectors. Human Impact Assessment (HuIA) is a relatively new concept. It describes an integrated process that encompasses both Health Impact Assessment and Social Impact Assessment and is used to anticipate the effects of programs, projects and decisions on human health and welfare. Sleep occupies approximately one-third of our lives, but its human impact remains largely unrecognized. The prevalence of excessive sleepiness is recognized to be increasing in industrialized societies. Without doubt, sleepiness and fatigue have high costs in terms of both lives lost and socioeconomic impact. For example, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that up to 4% of all fatal crashes are caused by drowsy drivers and that as many as 100,000 deaths per year in the United States may be due to fatigue-related medical errors. Sleepiness and Human Impact Assessment provides a uniquely comprehensive exploration of many different facets of sleepiness in our 24-hour society from the new HuIA point of view. Among the covered issues are the physiology and pathophysiology of sleep, its relationship to daytime alertness, fatigue and drugs, the relevance of sleep-related fatigue in various occupational settings and public safety. This book will be of assistance to physicians, occupational health professionals, ergonomists, researchers and decision-makers as they strive to understand the full significance of sleepiness and to create a culture of accountability in everyday life without sleep-related risks.

Sleep and Movement Disorders

editore: Oxford University Press Inc
pagine: 800
Sleep and Movement Disorders is the second edition of a successful book that was the first of its kind. Since its publication in 2002, significant progress has been made in our understanding of motor control in sleep and the relationship between sleep and movement disorders. All three editors are authorities on the subject and have assembled expert specialists for their chapter authors. The topic is very timely, the latest edition of the International classification of sleep disorders (ICSD-2, 2005) included a separate category of 'Sleep Related Movement Disorders' emphasizing the increasing awareness of sleep-related movements and the importance of recognizing sleep-related movement disorders for diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment. This is a comprehensive resource, including all findings from the last 8 years of research. All the previous chapters have been revised with new materials and references. Several chapters have been added to address recent advances.
For instance, new sleep-related disorders have been classified and diagnosed, including catathrenia, alternating leg muscle activation (ALMA), propriospinal myoclonus (PSM) at sleep onset, faciomandibular myoclonus at sleep onset, etc. Further understanding of the pathophysiology of RLS-PLMS is addresses, as is the neurobiology of REM Behavior Disorder (RBD), predictors of neurodegenerative diseases, and so on. Sleep and Movement Disorders is divided into four major sections and subsections preceded by an introductory essay to provide perspective on the subject. The book is intended for all sleep and movement disorders specialists as well as those neurologists, internists including pulmonologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, otolaryngologists, pediatricians, neurosurgeons, dentists and family physicians who must deal with the many patients suffering from undiagnosed or underdiagnosed sleep disorders including sleep-related abnormal movements.

Dynamic Structure of NREM Sleep
Peter Halasz , Robert Bodizs
editore: Springer London Ltd
pagine: 112
"Dynamic Structure of NREM Sleep" is a concise guide to Cyclic Alternating Pattern (CAP) phenomenology and slow wave homeostasis. It presents an original approach to a specialized aspect of sleep neuroscience in a concise and easy-to-read format. The authors are specialists in the field of sleep neuroscience and lend a new perspective to the benefits of slow wave activity during sleep. The main feature of this discussion is that slow wave activity increases as a function of previous wakefulness and it gradually decreases in the course of sleep. Alongside developing this idea, this book covers the entire range of sleep issues from basic structure to function in comprehensive detail. "Dynamic Structure of NREM Sleep" is valuable reading for neurologists, sleep neuroscientists and those with an interest in the field.

Atlas of Electroencephalography in Sleep Medicine
Hrayr P. Attarian , Nidhi S. Undevia
editore: Springer Verlag New York Inc.
pagine: 108
Sleep Medicine is a field that attracts physicians from a variety of clinical backgrounds. As a result, the majority of sleep specialists who interpret sleep studies (PSG) do not have specialized training in neurophysiology and electroencephalography (EEG) interpretation. Given this and the fact that PSGs usually are run at a third of the speed of EEGs and that they usually have a limited array of electrodes, waveforms frequently appear different on the PSGs compared to the EEGs. This can lead to challenges interpreting certain unusual looking activity that may or may not be pathological. This "Atlas of Electroencephalograpy in Sleep Medicine" is extensively illustrated and provides an array of examples of normal waveforms commonly seen on PSG, in addition to normal variants, epileptiform and non-epileptiform abnormalities and common artifacts. This resource is divided into five main sections with a range of topics and chapters per section. The sections cover Normal Sleep Stages; Normal Variants; Epileptiform Abnormalities; Non-epileptiform Abnormalities; and, Artifacts. Each example includes a brief description of each EEG together with its clinical significance, if any.
Setting the book apart from others in the field is the following feature: Each EEG discussed consists of three views of the same page - one at a full EEG montage with 30mm/sec paper speed, the same montage at 10mm/sec (PSG speed) and a third showing the same thing at 10 mm/sec, but with the abbreviated PSG montage. Unique and the first resource of its kind in sleep medicine, "The Atlas of Electroencephalograpy in Sleep Medicine" will greatly assist those physicians and sleep specialists who read PSGs to identify common and unusual waveforms on EEG as they may appear during a sleep study and serve as a reference for them in that capacity.
