PERIS+TORAL ARQUITECTES è uno studio con sede a Barcellona, ​​fondato nel 2005 da Marta Peris e José Toral, dedicato alla ricerca sull’abitare e sui metodi costruttivi. Dal 2004, Manuel Cervantes Estudio porta avanti una pratica architettonica che considera ogni progetto come un’opportunità per instaurare un dialogo con il territorio, la cultura e il tempo. Piuttosto che perseguire uno stile, lo studio costruisce processi: gli architetti indagano, osservano e distillano le condizioni locali - clima, materiali, mestieri e vita quotidiana - per trasformarle in un’architettura utile, semplice ed essenziale. Il loro lavoro si fonda su una serie di temi ricorrenti: l’abitare con responsabilità ambientale, il costruire con precisione e chiarezza, e la creazione di spazi che permettano alla vita di svolgersi in modo diretto.Lo studio è guidato dalla ricerca e dall’esplorazione: dall’edilizia sociale ai paesaggi rituali, dalle infrastrutture aeroportuali ai padiglioni temporanei, ogni progetto è un’ipotesi costruita che cerca di bilanciare innovazione e buon senso. Membro del SNCA (Sistema Nazionale dei Creatori d’Arte) e dell’Accademia Messicana di Architettura, la sua carriera combina pratica professionale, ricerca e insegnamento. È stato professore ospite alla Porto Academy, all’Università della Virginia e all’Università Anáhuac, dove attualmente ricopre la Cattedra Manuel Cervantes. Il suo lavoro, riconosciuto per la chiarezza costruttiva e l’attenzione al territorio, è diventato un punto di riferimento nell’architettura messicana contemporanea.

Selgascano ha iniziato la sua carriera nel 1992 a Madrid, ha aperto una sede fisica nel 1996 e si è trasferito nel suo spazio attuale, chiamato “Office in the Woods”, nel 2006 – curiosamente, il progetto più visitato di sempre su Archdaily. Lo studio è un piccolo laboratorio e intende rimanerlo per sempre. José Selgas e Lucía Cano tendono a evitare di tenere conferenze e interventi per concentrarsi sui loro progetti, considerando ciascuno di essi come una complessità distinta e una propria personalità: in ognuno di essi, storia, memoria, economia, percezione e natura sono gli elementi distintivi che plasmano irrevocabilmente il risultato finale. Questa definizione finale è plasmata dal totale coinvolgimento dell’architettura nel processo costruttivo, concepito come un continuo ascolto del maggior numero di elementi coinvolti, dalla produzione all’installazione, sempre con una parallela indagine sulla possibilità di modificare queste soluzioni più tipiche per semplificarne l’applicazione in architettura. Lo studio ha sempre evitato di utilizzare giochi e meccanismi che riflettessero interessi disciplinari personali, limitandosi a ricercare una bellezza comprensibile a qualsiasi essere umano. In ogni progetto, e sempre di più, lo studio ritiene essenziale che l’architettura ceda il più possibile terreno alla natura e che la presenza dell’ambiente costruito sia sempre la più minima possibile o ridotta a quell’architettura che, utilizzando mezzi artificiali e applicando tecnologie prese in prestito da altri campi che raramente si intrecciano con l’architettura, consente l’emergere di nature future. Aires Mateus vanta oltre 30 anni di esperienza nella progettazione architettonica, nella pianificazione urbanistica e nella ristrutturazione di edifici storici. Lo studio è gestito dai fratelli Manuel e Francisco Aires Mateus. Il loro ambito di attività spazia dai grandi progetti generali alla decorazione di piccoli progetti, passando per tutto ciò che sta nel mezzo. Aires Mateus Studio partecipa a tutte le fasi di un progetto, dai primi passi fino alla consegna dell’edificio al cliente. The magazine presents the work of Harquitectes, the Spanish architectural firm founded in 2000 by David Lorente, Josep Ricart, Xavier Ros, and Roger Tudó. In addition to showcasing their most significant projects and works completed since 2021, the monographic issue includes a conversation with Harquitectes conducted by Cristina Díaz Moreno and Efrén García Grinda, plus an essay by architect Jesús Vassallo. Highlighted projects include the new Barcelona offices for pharmaceutical company Galenicum, social housing in Gavá and Palma, libraries in Quart and Terrassa, the Montjuïc Fairground in Barcelona, the extension of the MACBA, and several private homes.

Throughout his career, the Genovese architect Alberto Ponis has combined the practice of architecture with that of painting, a tool and a stimulus for his activity as a designer of buildings. He has repeatedly drawn each of the sites for his projects, attentive to every detail in his designs with profound precision. This includes the nature of the places and the landscapes where they are located, the characters and needs of those who will inhabit them, and the specific conditions of their construction, always carried out with local builders and using local materials. This monographic edition of the magazine surveys the scope of his breathtaking practice and its context in meticulous detail. Alberto Ponis (Nervi, Genoa, 1933) grew up in contact with some of the most prominent Italian artists and designers of the early 20th century &mdashincluding Giò Ponti, Arturo Martini, Tomaso Buzzi, Paolo Buffa and Fortunato Depero, among others&mdash since his Father, Mario Alberto Ponis, collaborated with them through his company MITA (founded in Nervi, in 1926), specializing in the production of rugs, textiles and "artist's tapestries". Alberto Ponis enrolled at the School of Architecture in Florence in 1953. He graduated summa cum laude in 1960 and moved to the United Kingdom shortly after. From 1960 to 1964 he worked in London with Ernö Goldfinger and Denys Lasdun, where he came into contact with Brutalism, then a dominant presence on the British scene but was also introduced to the relationship between the concept of landscape and painting. In 1963 he arrived in Gallura, on the northern coast of Sardinia, an untouched place of extraordinary beauty, accompanying a group of British investors. He began his work in Palau &mdashthen a small port connecting with the island of La Maddalena&mdash where he has lived ever since. From the time of his arrival on the island, Ponis felt a deep fascination with the beauty of its nature, the presence of granite rock formations, the Mediterranean macchia landscape and the extraordinary morphology of the coastline. Sardinia was almost uninhabited then, with small rural settlements and stazzi scattered across the landscape.

OFFICE is a Brussels-based architectural practice founded in 2002 by Kersten Geers (Ghent, 1975) and David Van Severen (Ghent, 1978). The two met while studying at the University of Ghent and at ETSAM (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura) in Madrid. OFFICE was established as a means of exploring the prospect of architecture within the contemporary culture and urban environment. While constructing a theoretical project of architecture, OFFICE has developed a practical and pragmatic approach to design, combining skill and cunning for an expeditious decision-making process, to make architecture as a civic obligation. In parallel to this practice, OFFICE directed design studios at various institutions, including the Academy of Architecture USI, Mendrisio where Kersten Geers is currently a Full Professor, and Harvard GSD where he and David Van Severen together serve as Design Critics in Architecture. This educational activity &mdashand the various outcomes of research in design&mdash stands in direct relation to the work. and is documented under the moniker "Office Without Office". OFFICE is a team of about 40 architects, organised as partnership led by Kersten Geers, David Van Severen and Jan Lenaerts, together with associates Justine Rossillion, Alexander Smedts, Jacopo Lugli, Inga Karen Traustadottir and Jelena Pančevac.

Diego Quirarte Contreras nasce a Guadalajara, Messico, nel 1988. Studia architettura all'ITESO, l'Università dei Gesuiti di Guadalajara, in Messico, laureandosi con lode. Tra il 2009 e il 2019 è project manager per il Grupo Cube Inmobiliario. Tra il 2011 e il 2014 si occupa, come architetto locale, della costruzione del Padiglione Rio Blanco a Guadalajara, Messico, progettato dall’Estudio Carme Pinós, Barcellona. Dal 2013 collabora con l’Estudio Carme Pinós. Tra il 2013 e il 2019 coordina il progetto Rinconada Margaritas per l’Estudio Luis Aldrete Arquitectos a Guadalajara. Nel 2015 conduce un workshop a Boisbuchet, Lessac, Francia, con l'architetto portoghese Alvaro Siza. Tuñón y Albornoz Arquitectos is an architecture firm based in Madrid, dedicated to the encounter of the practice of design and construction with theory and teaching. Directed by Emilio Tuñón and Carlos Martínez de Albornoz, Tuñón y Albornoz Arquitectos emerged as a natural evolution of Mansilla + Tuñón Arquitectos following the death of the architect Luis M. Mansilla in 2012. Emilio Tuñón (Madrid, 1959) is an architect who earned his degree from the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM) in 1981, and he earned his PhD from ETSAM in 2000. In 1993, together with Luis M. Mansilla and Luis Rojo, he founded the research cooperative CIRCO, awarded with the FAD Prize in 2007 and the BIAU in 2002. His work in research was recognized with the Francqui Chair in Brussels in 2015. In 1992, he cofounded Mansilla + Tuñón Arquitectos with Luis M. Mansilla (1959-2012), and in 2012 he cofounded Tuñón y Albornoz Arquitectos. He is a professor in the Architectural Design department at ETSAM. He has taught as the Jean Labatut Professor at the Princeton School of Architecture (2008-2010) and the Eliot Noyes Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (2006), and he has been a visiting professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (2005) and the Frankfurt Städelschule (1997-1998). Emilio Tuñón has been recognized with the following awards: National Award for Architecture (2022), RIBA International Fellowship (2019), Community of Madrid Award (2018), Francqui Chair (2015), Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts (2014), Mies van der Rohe Award (2007) and European Union Prize (2007). Carlos Martínez de Albornoz (Huesca, 1978) is an architect who earned his degree from the Higher Technical School of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM) in 2004. He completed part of his degree at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London (2000-2001), where he also collaborated with David Chipperfield Architects. In 2004 he joined the studio Mansilla + Tuñón Arquitectos, and in 2012 he co-founded Tuñón y Albornoz Arquitectos with Emilio Tuñón, as a natural transition from Mansilla + Tuñón Arquitectos. Carlos Martinez de Albornoz has been teaching since 2005. He has been a guest professor at the Barrié de la Maza Foundation in Vigo (2005), at the School of Architecture of Barcelona – ETSAB (2009), at the Casa Encendida in Madrid for the VII Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (2011), and at the Faculty of Architecture at Hasselt University in Belgium (2015).

He studied at Kingston School of Art and the Architectural Association in London before founding his own practice in 1985. He has developed a design methodology that is now used across five offices in London, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Santiago de Compostela. David Chipperfield is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and an honorary fellow of both the American Institute of Architects and the Bund Deutscher Architekten. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2004, appointed a Royal Designer for Industry in 2006, and elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2008. Among the accolades he has received are the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, awarded in 2009, and a knighthood for services to architecture in the UK and Germany, awarded in 2010. In 2021 David Chipperfield was appointed a member of the UK's Order of the Companions of Honour and in 2023 he was elected into Germany's Orden Pour le mérite für Wissenschaften und Künste, awarded Spain's Encomienda de la Orden de Isabel la Católica and selected as the 2023 Laureate of The Pritzker Architecture Prize. In addition to design work, David Chipperfield has taught and lectured worldwide at schools of architecture in Austria, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. He holds honorary doctorates from Kingston University and the University of Kent. In 2012 he curated the 13th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale under the title Common Ground. He served as the mentor for architecture from 2016–17 for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. In 2017 he founded Fundación RIA, a private, non-profit entity that works towards meaningful economic, environmental and cultural development in Galicia, Spain. David Chipperfield has published numerous books and articles, including On Planning – A Thought Experiment (2018), a publication that explores and theorizes the urban qualities of contemporary development. He was the 2020 guest editor of Italian design magazine Domus.

The Balearic Social Housing Institute (IBAVI) is a public body attached to the Mobility and Housing Ministry of the Government of the Balearic Islands. Since 1986, its main objective has been the promotion and rental of social housing. The IBAVI collaborates with other organisations in the management of subsidies and mortgage guarantees, among other activities, all of them designed to facilitate and improve access to housing for the region’s residents. It also manages the Balearic Islands public housing stock (1,753 social rental homes in 2019). At this moment, 1,118 new dwellings are either finished, under construction or at the drafting stage of the project with a construction budget. These 46 promotions, adapted to the scale of the islands’ towns, follow the principles of the Life Reusing Posidonia project, funded by the European LIFE+ for Nature Conservation & Climate Change Adaptation Projects, awarded with the 2021 LIFE Award for Best Environment Project by the European Commission. The goal is to increase the housing stock to 3,000 dwellings, including inputs from other procedures. The Institute’s desire to constantly increase this stock is based on two core objectives: to tackle both the current housing crisis and the ongoing climate emergency. Most of these housing projects have been designed by external studios via a project competition or public tenders. Experienced, well-known teams as well as young emerging talents have provided examples of a new language based on a change of model to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which prioritize maximum comfort using passive criteria to reduce energy poverty, the use of preferably local materials with a low CO2 footprint, and the inclusion of the gender perspective in the design, all of this seeking the highest architectural quality. Paradoxically, this new language emerges from the recovery and adaptation of the local Balearic heritage to contemporary needs. The IBAVI’s work has been published and exhibited extensively, and won several awards (such as the AE Emerging Award 2022).

Eduardo Souto de Moura was born in Porto, Portugal, in 1952. In 1970 he began his studies in Architecture at the School of Fine Arts in Porto. Throughout his academic studies he collaborates with architects Noé Denis, Álvaro Siza and Fernandes de Sá. After graduating in 1980, he opened his own office.Among numerous other national and international awards, Eduardo Souto de Moura has received the Pessoa Prize in 1998, the FAD Prize in 2005, the Ibero-American Prize for Architecture and Urbanism in 2006, the Pritzker Prize in 2011 or the 'Leone d'Oro' Prize at The Venice Biennale in 2018.He is also an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects, an international member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and since 2022 a member of the French Academy of Architecture.

Revised and updated edition of issues 127 and 158 dedicated to John Pawson. It includes the projects developed by the architect from 1995 to 2022.John Pawson was born in 1949 in Halifax, Yorkshire. Following school and a period of employment in the family textile business he left for Japan, spending several years teaching English at the business university of Nagoya. Towards the end of his time there he moved to Tokyo, where he frequented the studio of Japanese architect and designer Shiro Kuramata. Never a formal apprentice, the experience nonetheless proved pivotal. Following his return to England, he enrolled at the Architecture Association in London, leaving to establish his own practice in 1981. In 2019 Pawson was awarded a CBE for services to design and architecture.From the outset the work focused on exploring fundamental problems of space, proportion, light and materials, rather than on developing a set of stylistic mannerisms, beginning with renovation of the London apartment he shared with the art dealer Hester van Royen. Domestic commissions followed for the writer Bruce Chatwin, opera director Pierre Audi and art collector Doris Lockhart Saatchi, executed in parallel with a number of early art spaces, including Waddington Galleries in London and the PPOW Gallery in New York.Whilst private houses have remained a consistent strand of the work, projects over the past two decades have spanned an increasingly wide range of scales and building typologies, from a walkway across the lake at Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens on the outskirts of London, to the interiors of two yachts, sets for new ballets at London’s Royal Opera House and the Opéra Bastille in Paris, and remodelling of the former Commonwealth Institute in London, which opened as a new permanent home for the Design Museum in 2016. Pawson’s substantial portfolio of sacred commissions includes the design of a new Cistercian monastery in rural Bohemia, interior renovation of the basilica of the Benedictine Archabbey of Pannonhalma in Hungary and the St Moritz church in Bavaria and the design of a small wooden chapel on the edge of a forest in Germany.
