Ashcroft completed his undergraduate studies at the University of New Zealand in 1958 and received his PhD in 1964 from the University of Cambridge for research investigating the Fermi surfaces of metals. Following his PhD, Ashcroft completed postdoctoral research at the University of Chicago and at Cornell University, where he became a Professor in 1975. In 1990 he was named the Horace White Professor of Physics, and was elected to emeritus status in 2006. He served as the director for the Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics at Cornell University (1979-1984), the director for the Cornell Center for Materials Research (1997-2000), and as the deputy director for the High Energy Synchrotron Source (1990-1997). Between 1986 and 1987, he served as the head of the Condensed Matter division of the American Physical Society. His textbook on solid-state physics, written with N. David Mermin, is a standard text in the field. Since 1997, he has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences. N. David Mermin is Horace White Professor of Physics Emeritus at Cornell University. He has received the Lilienfeld Prize of the American Physical Society and the Klopsteg Award of the American Association of Physics Teachers. He is a member of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Mermin has written on quantum foundational issues for several decades, and is known for the clarity and wit of his scientific writings. Among his other books are Solid State Physics (with N. W. Ashcroft, Thomson Learning 1976), Boojums all the Way Through (Cambridge University Press 1990), and It's about Time: Understanding Einstein's Relativity (Princeton University Press 2005).

The Science and Engineering of Materials 7 ed.

Donald Askeland , Wendelin Wright

editore: Cengage Learning

Develop a thorough understanding of the relationships between structure, processing and the properties of materials with Askeland/Wright's THE SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING OF MATERIALS, ENHANCED, SI, 7th Edition. This comprehensive edition serves as a useful professional reference for current or future study in manufacturing, materials, design or materials selection. This science-based approach to materials engineering highlights how the structure of materials at various length scales gives rise to materials properties. You examine how the connection between structure and properties is key to innovating with materials, both in the synthesis of new materials as well as in new applications with existing materials. You also learn how time, loading and environment all impact materials -- a key concept that is often overlooked when using charts and databases to select materials. Trust this enhanced edition for insights into success in materials engineering today.

Organic Chemistry, International Edition

William H. Brown , Brent L. Iverson
e altri

editore: Cengage Learning

pagine: 1312

Succeed in the course with this student-friendly, proven text. Designed throughout to help you master key concepts and improve your problem-solving skills, ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, 7E, International Edition includes a running margin glossary, end-of-chapter in-text mini study guides, a focus on "how to" skills, and more in-chapter examples and problems than any text on the market. To help you understand reaction mechanisms, the authors offset them in a stepwise fashion and emphasize similarities between related mechanisms using just four different characteristics: breaking a bond, making a new bond, adding a proton, and taking a proton away. Thoroughly updated throughout, the book offers numerous biological examples for premed students, unique roadmap problems, a wide range of in-text learning tools, and integration with an online homework and tutorial system, which now includes an interactive multimedia eBook.
