A Pocket Guide to Bisphosphonates in Clinical Practice
Prevention and Therapy of Bone Disorders
Bertha Frisch , Reiner Bartl
editore: Blackwell Science Ltd
pagine: 150
The potential capacity of the biphosphonates to intervene in osseous remodeling was recognized more than 30 years ago. The biphosphonates inhibit osteoclastic activity. In spite of advances in early detection, surgey, chemo-and radiotherapy, metastatic bone disease is still a major and in many cases intractable clinical problem. The biphosphonates are now the most effective agents in the management of bone metastases - as shown by trials in patients with breast and prostate cancer, and in multiple myeloma. Bone pain, new ostelytic events and pathologic fractures are decreased and complications associated with these events are avoided. Existing osteolytic lesions may even be reversed. New fields of indications of biphosphonates are shown to be in the adjuvant therapy of breast cancer and in stage 1 multiple myeloma to prevent skeletal destruction and also to inhibit tumor growth. Over the past few years the biphosphonates have proved their value also in many other conditions such as Paget's disease of bone, osseous disorders with an osteoclastic component leading to osteopenia/osteoporosis, in congenial, endocrine and metabolic disorders.
Perhaps, for the future and for the next millennium the most widespread and extensive use to these anti-osteoclastic component leading to osteopenia/osteoporosis, in congenial, endocrine and metabolic disorders. Perhaps, for the future and for the next millennium the most widespread and extensive use to these anti-osteoclastic agents will be in these disorders, and particularly in so-called primary osteoporosis which evenually effects anyone who lives long enough, causing widespread morbidity with drastic economic consequences both individually and nationally. The authors' aim is to provide an office and desk companion - comprehensive, concise, practical for easy reference - an up-to-date guide for prevention and therapy of skeletal complications whenever and wherever they occur in general and specialized medical practice.

Communicable Disease Control Handbook
Jeremy Hawker
editore: Blackwell Science Ltd
pagine: 288
The term "communicable disease control" describes the way in which outbreaks of infectious diseases are managed to prevent their transmission and spread. This includes surveillance, prevention, investigation and response to cases. This book is a practical guide. In Europe the range of diseases and infectious agents differs from that of the US, and yet the only real reference in this field is an American book: "Benenson: Control of Communicable Disease Manual". This is published by the American Public Health Association every five years and is considered to be a good resource. The problem is that it covers many diseases that do not occur in Europe and omits a number of important European infections. Furthermore, the epidemiological information it gives is based on the US population. It does not consider the public health issues in a European and UK context. This volume aims to fill the gap in the European market.

Magnetic Resonance in Medicine
The Basic Textbook of the European Magnetic Resonance Forum
Peter Rinck
editore: Blackwell Science Ltd
pagine: 252
The purpose of this book is to provide a fundamental understanding of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. From this, readers will acquire a fundamental knowledge that enables them to pursue studies of their own and to cope with some of the most common problems, such as image contrast and artifacts or questions concerning possible hazards to patients. MR imaging not only requires knowledge of facts, but also some background information for decision-making. This edition, therefore, includes some subjective, critical, and opinion-oriented sections, intended to offset the technical nature of the book and provide some insights into more practical questions faced by MR users. A new addition to this edition is MR Image Expert, an interactive learning and teaching tool for MR which simulates the most important aspects of MR imaging on a personal computer. A further application, Dynalize, is included which allows the presentation and analysis of dynamic MR imaging studies.
