Epigenetics and Disease
En Li , Susan M. Gasser
editore: Birkhauser Verlag AG
pagine: 280
Epigenetics has emerged recently as an important area of molecular biological studies. Epigenetic modifications lead to potentially heritable but reversible alterations in the expression of genes that determine cell fate. Epigenetic misregulation is thus often linked to degenerative diseases, cancer and neuronal disorders. Recent biomedical interest in this regulatory system stems from the fact that epigenetic, in contrast to genetic, alterations are in principle amenable to pharmacological intervention. A few epigenetically active drugs, for example histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) and DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitors, have been approved by FDA for treatment of cancers such as CTCL, MDS, and AML. This volume explores the scientific background for clinical applications of epigenetically active drugs. Included are descriptions of epigenetic controls over gene expression, the post-transcriptional silencing of genes by RNA interference (RNAi) and microRNAs, as well as new findings from stem cell research which are relevant to pharmacological applications.
Bone Morphogenetic Proteins
From Local to Systemic Therapeutics
Kuber T. Sampath , Slobodan Vukicevic
editore: Birkhauser Verlag AG
pagine: 354
Completing the PIR series, this volume summarizes the major advances made in the local and systemic use of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs). Chapters are dedicated to the regulation of BMP-signaling pathways; biological actions of BMPs in bone, cartilage, and teeth; clinical applications; and the potential systemic use of BMPs for tissues beyond bone. The authors are all recognized experts in the field of tissue engineering and regeneration.
Systems Biological Approaches in Infectious Diseases
editore: Birkhauser Verlag AG
pagine: 359
This book brings together the various fields of functional genomics and systems biology that provide information on metabolic function. There is special emphasis on the identification of drug targets. The book includes practical examples from the various "omic" sciences as well as theoretical examples of how integrated knowledge of these sciences can be applied to drug discovery. It is of interest to researchers in the pharmaceutical drug discovery environment.
Imaging in Drug Discovery and Early Clinical Trials
Markus Rudin
editore: Birkhauser Verlag AG
pagine: 402
This monograph examines the contribution of imaging modalities to the stages of drug discovery and development, from early target validation to their use in clinical development programs. Chapters are devoted to the description of the drug discovery process, to the various imaging modalities preclinically and clinically, to applications of imaging during the optimization of a lead compound, addressing issues such as bioavailability and efficacy, and during drug safety evaluation.
Recent Advances in the Pathophysiology of COPD
Peter J. Barnes , Trevor T. Hansel
editore: Birkhauser Verlag AG
pagine: 243
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) ranges amongst the commonest diseases in the world. The relentless progression of the disease causes a pressing need for a better understanding of and therapies for COPD. This volume provides state-of-the-art information on the pathophysiology of COPD including an outlook on new therapies. It is of interest to researchers and clinicians in academia as well as in the pharmaceutical industry.
Mind over Matter
Regulation of Peripheral Inflammation by the CNS
Christoph Stein , Michael Schafer
editore: Birkhauser Verlag AG
pagine: 215
Several new developments in the field of neuroimmunology with focus on the brain-to-immune system communication have been the incentive for this PIR volume. It covers topics such as brain-immune interactions, the impact of stress on the immune response, pain and immunosuppression, the modulation of inflammation and pain by the sympathetic nervous system, consequences of nerve injury for the immune system, neuronal mechanisms of immune cell recruitment, and the modulation of the immune response by corticotropin-releasing hormone or adenosine. The authors are a unique group of scientists who are all interested in brain-to-immune interactions; however, each from a different perspective. The volume will serve both neurobiologists and immunologists to understand the influence of the central nervous system on peripheral inflammation. Many aspects of this book will also be stimulating for researchers in the pain field.
Peptide Transport and Delivery into the Central Nervous System
Katalin Prokai-Tatrai , Laszlo Prokai
editore: Birkhauser Verlag AG
pagine: 253
Various peptides native to the brain and the spinal cord, as well as various synthetic peptides, peptide analogues and peptidomimetics could be useful in the treatment of diseases of the central nervous system. This book provides an overview of the role and neuropharmaceutical potential of these peptides, and discusses the state of the art and future trends in the use of peptide pharmacotherapy involving the brain.

editore: Birkhauser Verlag AG
pagine: 377
Progress in Drug Research is a prestigious book series which provides extensive expert-written reviews on a wide spectrum of highly topical areas in current pharmaceutical and pharmacological research. It serves as an important source of information for researchers concerned with drug research and all those who need to keep abreast of the many recent developments in the quest for new and better medicines.
Antifungal Agents
Advances and Problems
Ernst Jucker
editore: Birkhauser Verlag AG
pagine: 260
This second volume of PDR SPECIAL TOPICS contains five review articles, covering nearly the entire field of fungal diseases in humans as well as therapeutic approaches. The main emphasis of the book lies in antifungal therapy: the most relevant information on the present state of the art of antifungal chemotherapy for dermatomycoses, subcutaneous and invasive mycoses is summarized, and open questions and unsolved problems are presented. The book is ideal for both the practitioner as well as advanced student.
