Gli animali sono esseri viventi, che con noi condividono sentimenti ed emozioni, ma che pure per molti versi non ci somigliano: capirli, decodificare i loro messaggi e il loro specifico linguaggio è alla base del rispetto che dobbiamo loro ed è contemporaneamente training per imparare a mettersi dal punto di vista dell'altro, chiunque esso sia. È quindi fondamentale che i bambini siano aiutati dagli adulti a interpretare il linguaggio del corpo e i suoni con cui gli animali, domestici e non, segnalano i loro stati emotivi, imparando che anche loro amano, soffrono, chiedono aiuto, cercano la gioia. Esiste una insanabile contraddizione tra queste convinzioni e la diffusa brutalità nei confronti degli animali da parte degli adulti. Tante sono le facce in cui si dipana il nostro rapporto con gli animali, per lo più imbevuto di una crudeltà e di una violenza di cui non sembriamo nemmeno essere consapevoli. Ma è venuto il tempo di prendere posizione, di non più negare o misconoscere le ingiustizie di cui siamo responsabili o testimoni, imparando a guardare con occhi diversi la ricchezza delle altre vite -quelle degli animali - che di continuo si intersecano con le nostre e di cui, spesso inconsapevolmente, sentiamo un bisogno imprescindibile.
