Dopo la legge del 18 gennaio 1984, l'assistenza sanitaria è assicurata in Francia anche in ambito penitenziario dagli ospedali e le équipe ospedaliere di psichiatria sono chiamate a intervenire con un mandato di identificazione precoce dei disturbi e presa in carico delle malattie mentali dei detenuti.
