Schizophrenia is a debilitating and serious medical illness that has a profound effect on the patient's life, as well as the lives of their immediate family, friends and carers. The symptoms and course of the illness vary considerably between individuals, making diagnosis and subsequent management a complex task for the clinician. Finally, an excellent reference list allows the interested reader to gather further information on specific topics for themselves. The book is full of new information and clinical pearls, written in a condensed, pocket-book format. American Psychiatric Association Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders

Compendium

American Psychiatric Association

editore: American Psychiatric Press Inc.

pagine: 1612

American Psychiatric Association (APA) Practice Guidelines provide recommendations to help psychiatrists make treatment decisions that are supported by the best available evidence, including from current research and expert consensus. The guidelines are developed by expert work groups, who review available evidence using an explicit methodology. Iterative drafts undergo wide review by other experts, allied organizations, and the APA membership. Every guideline is also reviewed and approved for publication by the APA Assembly and Board of Trustees. This process balances the conclusions of scientific research with the practical experience of professionals working in the field. In addition to providing recommendations that may improve patient care, the guidelines may be used for education by medical students and residents, psychiatrists seeking recertification, other mental health professionals, and the general public. Researchers may use the guidelines to identify important clinical questions for which more research could be expected to improve treatment decision making. The thirteen Practice Guidelines are -Psychiatric Evaluation of Adults, Second Edition -Delirium -Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias of Late Life -HIV/AIDS -Substance Use Disorders, Second Edition -Schizophrenia, Second Edition -Major Depressive Disorder, Second Edition -Bipolar Disorder, Second Edition -Panic Disorder -Acute Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder -Eating Disorders, Third Edition -Borderline Personality Disorder -Suicidal Behaviors These guidelines help you -Understand clinical features and symptoms -Make a confident differential diagnosis -Evaluate interventions commonly used to treat specific disorders -Select the appropriate site of service -Educate the patient and family -Assess the efficacy and risks of available medications -Develop an individualized treatment plan Interactive continuing medical education programs for many of the individual practice guidelines are available on the APA's web site (www.psych.org/cme). Each program offers AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsA that are accepted by the APA and the American Medical Association. The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) has reviewed the APA Practice Guidelines CME Program and has approved it as part of a comprehensive lifelong learning program, which is mandated by the American Board of Medical Specialties as a necessary component of maintenance of certification.

Cognition and Suicide

Theory, Research and Therapy

Thomas E. Ellis

editore: American psychological association

pagine: 400

Cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) leads the field of psychotherapy in the evidence-based study and treatment of many psychological disorders. However, CBT has been less prominently applied to the study and prevention of suicidal behaviors. This volume is a compilation of theory, research, and intervention practices focused on cognition and suicide. It brings together for the first time many of the world's leading authorities, who seek to answer such questions as, "How is the thinking of suicidal individuals different from nonsuicidal individuals?" "What cognitive vulnerabilities place an individual at risk for developing suicidal ideation and behavior when stressed?" And, "how does what we know of the thinking of suicidal people translate into cognitive-behavioral treatment strategies?" Each contributor discusses a particular theoretical and/or research framework, often with specific guidelines for clinical intervention tailored to specific cognitive vulnerabilities exhibited by suicidal patients. All of the major CBT theoretical systems are represented, including Aaron Beck's Cognitive Therapy, Albert Ellis's Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy, and Marsha Linehan's Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Specific empirically-derived cognitive features are also addressed, such as deficient problem-solving skills, perfectionism, negative body image, and overgeneral autobiographical memory. Implications for understanding and intervening with suicidal individuals are profound - suicidal thought processes are viewed here as causal (as opposed to merely correlated) factors in suicidality. Such thoughts, perhaps for the first time, begin to be viewed, not only as part of the problem, but as part of a potential solution.

The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Schizophrenia

Diana O. Perkins , Jeffrey A. Lieberman
e altri

editore: American Psychiatric Press Inc.

pagine: 453

Although there are many books that consider aspects of schizophrenia such as research or clinical care, now there is a single resource that puts the many facets of this widely misunderstood disorder in perspective. The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Schizophrenia offers broad coverage that encompasses the current state of knowledge the cause, nature, and treatment of schizophrenia. Experts in a wide range of disciplines from North America and Europe have contributed chapters that address the complexity of schizophrenia in a comprehensive volume on this singularly perplexing mental illness. No disorder is more challenging to psychiatrists and mental health care providers than schizophrenia, a condition that robs people of their personality and intellect and leaves them permanently disabled. This book leads readers through the maze of questions surrounding the disorder, from historical overview and epidemiology to consideration of comorbid conditions. It covers both genetic and environmental causes, describes all of the leading theories of schizophreniaAneurodevelopmental, neurochemical, phospholipid, and neuroprogressiveAand explores the involvement of abnormal brain circuitry and the results of the latest neuroimaging studies. For practicing clinicians, the topics covered represent the most essential, timely, and informative insights for treating this most prototypic of mental illnesses: -Approaching cognitive impairment as a potential psychopharmacological target for treatment, plus treatment strategies for improving functioning in individuals with social or vocational impairment. -An overview of selected antipsychotic drugsAincluding common side effectsAas well as antianxiety/hypnotics, antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and dopamine agonists. -A review of current proven psychosocial interventions designed to augment and complement drug therapy, highlighting the trend toward optimizing patient preference in the choice of treatment modality. -Keys to early identification of individuals vulnerable to psychoses and to assessing the potential for intervention with the promise of treatment earlier in life. -Optimal treatment approaches for first episodesAincluding individual, group, and family therapiesAto increase the likelihood of full recovery. -Special considerations for treatment of chronic schizophrenia, addressing frequently asked questions faced by psychiatrists in their daily encounters with patients. While its causes and cure remain elusive, schizophrenia can be better understood with the help of the authoritative knowledge collected in these pages. Squarely confronting a disease that has long afflicted and baffled human society, this textbook will serve as a dependable source of knowledge for a generation of students, scientists, and clinicians to come.

Pharmaceutical Reason

Knowledge and Value in Global Psychiatry

Andrew Lakoff

editore: Cambridge

pagine: 220

Andrew Lakoff argues that a new 'pharmaceutical' way of thinking about and acting upon mental disorder is coming to reshape not only the field of psychiatry, but also our very notions of self. Drawing from a comprehensive ethnography of psychiatric practice in Argentina (a country which boasts the most psychoanalysts per capita in the world) Lakoff looks at new ways of understanding and intervening in human behaviour. He charts the globalization of pharmacology, particularily the global impact of US psychiatry and US models of illness, and further illustrates the clashes, conflicts, alliances and reformulations that take place when psychoanalytic and psychopharmacological models of illness and cure meet. Highlighting the social and political implications that these new forms of expertise about human behaviour and human thought bring, Lakoff presents an arresting case-study that will appeal to scholars and students alike.

Adolescenza e psicopatologia

Daniel Marcelli , Alain Bracconnier

editore: Elsevier

pagine: 648

Jean-Louis Senon

editore: Centro Scientifico Editore

pagine: 158

The Prenatal Theme in Psychotherapy

Philippe Ploye

editore: Karnac Books

pagine: 180

This book is an attempt to examine whether patients in analysis or therapy can sometimes be said to form a kind of transference that not only operates at a prenatal level but can also lend itself to interpretation just like any other postnatal level of transference.Philippe Ploye considers whether the prenatal condition, usually conceived from a psychological point of view as one of objectless, pre-ambivalent fusion with the mother, would be capable of being relived and reenacted later in the form of a object-directed, aggressive, as well as libidinal, "foetal" form of relatedness to the therapist. The author looks at how this information might be best used in clinical practice, and the difficulty of communicating these "findings" to patients in a way that helps them by meaning something to them. He also looks at the question of whether the countertransference, too, can sometimes be seen to operate at pre/or perinatal level. There are also chapters on the possible role of the placenta in ego development and placenta symbolism, and a review of some of the literature concerning the pretnatal stage.
