Genetics for Pulmonologists
The Molecular Genetics Basis of Pulmonary Disorders
Joel Moss , Jordan Prutkin
editore: ReMedica
pagine: 200
Our understanding of the relationship between genetics and pulmonary disorders is still evolving. In 1989 cloning of the gene that, when mutated, causes cystic fibrosis marked a great advance in the study of genetic diseases. Yet, over a decade later, understanding of how this genetic defect leads to colonization by bacteria and inflammation in the lung remains elusive. This publication provides an overview of lung diseases for which the genetic defect has been defined. It aims to provide an easy-to-use manual with concise reviews of genetic diseases that a pulmonologist might encounter.
Childhood Asthma and Other Wheezing Disorders
M. Silverman
editore: Hodder Arnold
pagine: 496
This comprehensive account of the biological basis and clinical management of childhood asthma and other wheezing disorders brings together all the aspects necessary for full understanding by the trainee or practising respiratory physician, paediatrician, or specialist nurse of therapist. The text reviews the nature of childhood asthma, its developmental and biological origins and its impact both for the individual and for society. In each section the scientific background is brought together with comprehensive clinical information, reviewed where possible with an evidence base in mind, providing the reader with informed guidance to best practice. Thoroughly revised and updated throughout, this second edition reflects the significant developments that have occurred in the field during recent years.
Advances in medical genetics are discussed, new techniques for investigation of inflammatory processes and for the evaluation of the impact of childhood asthma are described fully, additional information on the aetiology of this condition is provided and the pharmacology section includes a description of the leukotriene receptor agonists, the first novel drug therapy to emerge for 20 years. An entirely new section devoted to 'asthma around the world' including personal perspectives from clinicians from Japan, Africa, Latin America, and elsewhere has also been added. The book continues to place childhood asthma in a wider social context, with sections on teachning and training for health professionals outside the hospital setting and the delivery of care in the community. It remains essential reading for all paediatricians and respiratory physicians in training and in practice, and will also provide invaluable reference material for other health care professionals caring for babies, children and adolescents with asthma and wheezing disorders.

Respiratory Care Pharmacology
Joseph L. Rau
editore: Mosby
pagine: 510
"Respiratory Care Pharmacology" presents all of the needs to know of respiratory pharmacology. It covers pharmacokinetics principles as they relate to respiratory agents, drug administration, and a range of specific drugs used in respiratory care and their effects on body systems. For the sixth edition, Rau has added newly released drugs and updated discussions with new content on adrenergic bronchodilators, mucoactive agents, anti-asthma agents, anti-infective agents, cardiac drugs, and circulatory drugs. For the first time ever, contributors have been brought on board to improve the non-respiratory drug sections of the book. This edition also includes more clinical scenarios and second-color throughout. As in the previous edition, the book is organized into three logical sections. The first section covers the basics of respiratory care pharmacology including the principles of drug action, the basic methods of drug administration, the standard drug calculations and the effects of drugs on body systems.
Fully referenced and comprehensive, the second section covers the drugs most frequently delivered to patients by respiratory therapists, and the third section covers the drugs used to treat critical care and cardiovascular patients.
Multidisciplinary Approaches to Breathing Pattern Disorders
Christopher Gilbert
,
Dinah Bradley
e altri
editore: Churchill Livingstone
pagine: 288
Functional breathing pattern disorders (BPD - the extreme of which is hyperventilation) disturb the biochemistry of the body, often leading to respiratory alkalosis. They are extremely common, mainly affecting women and frequently go unrecognized by clinicians. Research shows that BPDs can be responsible for causing, or helping to maintain, a vast range of symptoms including muscular pain (particularly involving the thorax and neck area), inefficient motor control, reduced core stability, tremors, and tetany, feelings of anxiety, easy fatiguability, sleep disturbances, dysphagia, epigastric pain, IBS, parasthesia, palpitations, dizziness, disturbed vision, and a variety of circulatory symptoms resulting from smooth muscle constriction. BPDs are easily tested for and - with patient cooperation - are commonly correctable via a combination of manual therapy and breathing rehabilitation strategies.
