Questo libro tratta di alcune condizioni dei bambini, frequenti e disturbanti, più alterazioni dello stato di benessere globale che vere e proprie malattie, situazioni in cui il soggetto è ancora completamente all'interno del suo "spazio salute" ed i suoi meccanismi fisiologici sarebbero in grado di mantenercelo se non intervenissero dei fattori ambientali esterni, quali l'inserimento in comunità, l'eccessiva attenzione ai richiami notturni ed alla frequenza delle scariche, una leggera incuria nell'igiene e nella cura della cute, una cattiva alimentazione, ecc. In tutti questi casi il farmaco, inteso come intervento forte che si sostituisce ai meccanismi fisiologici di ripristino delle funzioni, non serve. Occorre invece un intervento integrato, fatto di interventi di educazione e supporto ai genitori, di modifiche delle consuetudini di vita del bambino e di un aiuto più fisiologico possibile in cui sono molto utili le piante medicinali. E tuttavia è noto che la farmacocinetica del neonato presenta notevoli differenze rispetto all'adulto in termini di assorbimento, metabolismo, emivita, eliminazione e effetti collaterali, con possibili ripercussioni su sicurezza e efficacia. Inoltre, l'uso contemporaneo di più farmaci con possibili frequenti interazioni, deve suggerire particolare precauzione visto il terreno pressoché sconosciuto sul quale ci si muove. L'utilizzo di un farmaco prevede un percorso operativo che comprende numerosi passaggi (richiesta, conservazione, prescrizione, preparazione e somministrazione), ognuno dei quali può comportare errori di varia gravità, con ripercussioni assistenziali e "medico-legali" non trascurabili. Per rispondere a queste esigenze, nella SIN è stato costituito un Gruppo di Lavoro con il compito di redigere una guida pratica all'uso dei farmaci in epoca neonatale, da pubblicare su supporto cartaceo e elettronico.

Il volume raccoglie e sintetizza le basi teoriche e gli strumenti operativi di cui dispone il terapista per intervenire sulle patologie dell'infanzia di interesse riabilitativo. È principalmente rivolto agli studenti dei corsi di laurea delle professioni sanitarie della riabilitazione, ma anche a tutti gli operatori che si occupano di riabilitazione infantile e che prendono parte all'elaborazione e all'attuazione dei progetti riabilitativi dei bambini con particolare riferimento a quelli con disabilità neuropsichiatriche.
