CNS Cancer
Erwin G. van Meir
editore: Humana Press Inc.
pagine: 1296
Cancers of the central nervous system are among the most lethal of human neoplasms. They are recalcitrant to even intensive multimodality therapies that include surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Moreover, especially in children, the consequences of these therapies can itself be devastating and involve serious cognitive and developmental disorders. It is small wonder that such cancers have come under the intense scrutiny of each of the subspecialties of clinical care and investigation as well as attracting some of the best basic research scientists. Their joint efforts are gradually peeling away the mysteries surrounding the genesis and progression of these tumors and inroads are being steadily made into understanding why they resist therapies. This makes it an especially opportune time to assemble some of the best investigators in the field to review the "state of the art" in the various arenas that comprise the assault on CNS tumors. The breadth of this effort by the clinical and basic neuro-oncology community is quite simply amazing. To a large extent, it evolves from the knowledge of the human genome and its regulation that has been hard won over the past two decades.

Provides an international reference on clinical cancer medicine. It combines the experience of the world's leading cancer experts, particularly from leading European centres of excellence, with an approach that emphasizes the importance of the best clinical evidence: the guidelines to management are based on the sum of all the available evidence. For rare tumours, where clinical experience is the main guide to treatment, the editors have ensured that options and alternatives are discussed. There are major sections on all cancer sites, and in each section investigation, epidemiology, pathology, causes and treatment are covered in a consistent manner to aid reference. Quality-of-life and psychosocial issues, palliation, and communication are included.

Clinical Oncology
Raymond E. Lenhard , Ted S. Gansler
editore: American cancer society
pagine: 800
Clinical Oncology, the American Cancer Society's textbook of cancer, was conceived and produced as a source of information on the wide range of issues in cancer. It offers practical and immediate information and clinical approaches and serves as a bridge to more specialised and comprehensive textbooks and the literature. Although it is directed primarily to generalists in the health professions, it also will serve as a ready resource for those with special interest in oncology. Incorporated elements from our Textbook of Clinical Oncology, second edition and our Cancer manual, ninth edition which was developed by the American Cancer Society Massachusetts Division. The production of a CD-Rom version of this text, has given us the opportunity to enhance with colour art and graphics the presentation of some subjects, which was not possible using a print medium alone. This new text places an emphasis on directing the reader to reliable electronic databases, where the next step in inquiry can be taken. Increasing importance is placed on our new knowledge of genetics and other biological factors and their use as a guide to prognosis and selection of treatment.
