Nella pratica terapeutica si ricorre spesso alla polifarmacologia, cioe' al trattamento di una patologia usando piu' medicamenti contemporaneamente o a breve distanza l' uno dall' altro. Si ricorre alla polifarmacoterapia quando non si e' sicuri dell' efficacia di un solo medicamento e la si vuole migliorare con l' aggiunta di uno o di altri medicamenti. Vi si ricorre anche quando nel paziente sono presenti piu' patologie da trattare, come per esempio spesso capita nel paziente anziano.
