Percutaneous Laser Disc Decompression

A Practical Guide

Daniel S. J. Choy

editore: Springer Verlag New York Inc.

pagine: 251

Percutaneous laser disc decompression (PLDD) is an entirely new approach to the treatment of herniated intervertebral disc d- ease. The traditional laminectomy and discectomy procedure was first performed at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1934. In the intervening 69 years, science has moved forward with m- netic resonance imaging, sequencing of the human genome, ion propulsion, landing men on the moon and robots on Mars, the laptop computer, global positioning system navigation, black hole theory, string theory, and the successful cloning of animals. And yet, the same soft tissue-destroying, scar-inducing, pos- rior wall-weakening, and spinal instability-inducing cutting - eration is still being taught and performed. Advances in ort- pedics and neurosurgery occur slowly. Percutaneous laser disc decompression is minimally invasive; it can be performed as an outpatient procedure, requires no g- eral anesthesia, and has a high success rate, a low recurrence rate, and a low complication rate. By the middle of 2002, some 35,000 PLDD procedures had been performed worldwide. This book covers the history of the development of PLDD, laser physics, anatomy and pathophysiology of the herniated disc, the physics and mechanical principles that form the basis of PLDD, patient selection, radiographic considerations, the neurologic - amination, a step-by-step description of the PLDD procedure, the complications of PLDD and their treatments, special cases amenable to PLDD, postoperative care, and rehabilitation pro- dures. In short, this is a compendium of PLDD from A to Z.

Laparoscopic Urologic Oncology

Jeffrey A. Cadeddu

editore: Humana Press Inc.

pagine: 366

Minimally invasive urologic surgery is revolutionizing how physicians treat many urologic diseases. Laparoscopy in particular has reduced the pain, morbidity, and recovery time for many procedures traditionally per- formed through an open incision. Since laparoscopy is now the preferred modality for many benign conditions, the indications have expanded with the technique, so that it is now applied to the management of most urologic cancers. The aim of Laparoscopic U rolo g ic Oncology is to provide the first com- prehensive textbook dedicated to the minimally invasive management of urologic cancers. The book is not intended to review the biology of urologic tumors, which is well covered in other texts, but rather their management. In particular, it focuses on surgical technique and the role of laparoscopic surgery in the management of these tumors. It also addresses patient con- ditions for which a minimally invasive alternative does not exist. The book is not a surgical atlas, but it does provide a balanced insight into its indica- tions, contraindications, and results. Furthermore, the authors compare results to conventional open surgery, discuss controversies, and identify the shortcomings of minimally invasive procedures. In particular, such issues as the adequacy of oncologic results and their morbidity are com- pared to those experienced with conventional open techniques. Laparoscopic Urologic Oncology focuses on educating both general urologists and urologic oncologists on the current and future role of laparoscopy and other minimally invasive techniques in urologic oncology.

Handbook of Postoperative Complications

Anthony Peel , David J. Leaper

editore: Oxford University Press

pagine: 542

The Handbook of Postoperative Complications focuses on the complications that can arise after surgical procedures. Complications are clearly important and are increasingly used as measurable, clinical performance indicators. The consequences of postoperative complications can include the inconvenience to the patient, their relatives, work and lifestyle, complaints and litigation against the medical staff, and increased periods of hospitalisation, with the associated cost implications. The Handbook is divided into two sections. The first covers general complications such as pressure sores, complications of fluid balance and problems related to anaesthesia. Section two focuses in on the complications encountered in all of the major surgical specialties. This book, written and presented in the familiar, concise and convenient note-based style of the Oxford Pocket Medicine series, will be essential reading for all trainee surgeons, medical students, operating theatre staff, nurses, rehabilitation staff and general practitioners responsible for the care of surgical patients after their discharge from hospital.

Cartilage Surgery and Future Perspectives

Christian Hendrich , Jochen Eulert
e altri

editore: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K

pagine: 224

Tissue engineering as a technology and as a therapeutic has captured worldwide attention and commitmentbecause it has such potential in the care of humanity. Because we are not as yet able to craft robust three- dimensional vascular and ductal structures to support the development of complex parenchymal organs, the initial focus of the field has been on thin tissues that can be nourished by diffusion alone. The best example of this class is cartilage. Thought by some to be a relatively simple tissue in the early days of tissue engineering, deep study of this tissue has shown it to manifest great complexity.Yearsof experimental and clinical effort have begun to untangle the clues that will allow us to reproducibly characterize, gener- ate and clinically apply engineered cartilage with positive effects.World- wide researchers and clinicians are intently focused on this goal and it has come time to step back and make a good assessment of our progress.

Organ Preservation and Transplant Surgery

Jean-Michel Dubernard , Marwan Dawahra
e altri

editore: Informa Healthcare

pagine: 240

This new book, edited by internationally renowned specialists, also pools the experience of consultants from both Europe and the US. It is divided into three main sections: Organ Preservation, Organ Harvesting and Surgical Techniques. Many different organs are profiled, including the heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, intestine and bowel. The various aspects of preservation are discussed including cooling and preservation solutions, which are of special interest as researchers are actively exploring the composition of those solutions. Longer term preservation of the heart is still an unsolved problem and this is considered, as well as the pros and cons of organ donation from live or cadaveric donors. Fully referenced and illustrated with over 50 line drawings, Organ Preservation and Transplant Surgery will be of particular interest to those involved in the often complex surgery of organ harvesting or trainees in transplantation surgery. It gives clear accounts of techniques and a detailed update in the underlying science that determines and currently limits organ storage. It will also prove invaluable to the younger researcher who needs a clearer understanding of the scientific basis of organ preservation and the clinical need for better organ preservation.
